I also added a pic of me vs him on the down swing. This is from one of his videos where he seems to be using a wedge of some sort. Is he flat because he stands further away from the ball and dive at it through impact?

I would have to say his plane is so flat because of the way he is built. Hogan was in the 5'6 to 5'7 range apparently and seems to have long arms, making him have a very low wrist to floor measurment. It is my opinion that this is what made him even more prone to hooking because standard clubs (even though they were flatter lies then) would still be too upright for him. For instance, look at his setup for the driver. Even though the driver sits flat, he still has high hands adress. The end result is a swing that has to be flat to fit his porportions and the clubs.

Despite the planes being different i think it is more important to see HOW they are releasing through impact, which if you are working on 9-3, you already know.

Don't confuse the pane-of-glass plane with the shaft plane. Hogan only advises to not break the glass, not to keep the shaft on any particular angle.

+1

And let me add that the plane of glass of Hogan applies to both left arm AND shoulders. At least that's his feel or intention. Although in his actual swing, his left arm usually goes below that glass plane, and his shoulder line is above it. But many people seems to disregard the shoulder line plane.

IMO, Hogan is really not flat. Just looks like it. At that picture of Hogan you posted, if he would go back to top of BS and max out his swing turn, he will be very upright especially considering his smaller height. But his left arm is indeed flat RELATIVE to his shoulders. So, if his left arm is flat relative to shoulders, what made him upright relative to the plane of glass?

Hey 101 good to see you posting again.

Regarding the pic of Hogan,I hope you realise that is the downswing and not the backswing so in that particular sequence in that particular position he was very flat.

I do agree that Hogan was not that flat on the backswing and downswing, only briefly on the transition.

Thanks rsballer10

I was just shocked to see how flat he really was coming down that plane. Oddly at impact, our plane of attack is pretty close.

I don't know how you measured the angles here, but I also think the camera angle creates an illusion. Hogan is:

a) lower than you overall
b) has his hands are 2/3 down on the thighs and really close to his knees at impact, while your hands are out from the body and much higher than the knees.
c) has more forward bend from the hips and at leas as much knee bend compared to you.

a+b+c =MUCH FLATTER

The illustration of Hogan with the plane line that points far outside his ball is essential.
