Ping G20 Hybrids - surpise addition to my bag

I have to admit upfront that I have been hopelessly trying to find hybrids I like for the past 3 years. I have owned or tried most all of them.

I have been a huge fan of Ping everything, except the G15 and G20 hybrids - couldn't stand to look at them. My first thought was - puke, throw up - whatever - they were just plain ugly. I refused to even demo them because of their looks......until this past weekend.

I demo'd the following hybrids: Ping G20, RBZ, Adams A12 OS, Callaway RBZ, Titlesit 910h. I hit 30 balls with each hybrid, 30 balls each from fairway lies, rough lies, and from the Tee box - teed up. I test just the 4 hybrid of each brand.

I came away with strong conclusive evidence for feel, trajectory, dispersion and length. My No. 1 criteria was consistency/dispersion, then carry/trajectory, then length. (BTW the club with the highest trajectory went the farthest on average).

Hands down, the Ping G20 felt the best (absolutely no contest here!!!!), and to my surprise, with each test, they were on average the longest, and you could have thrown a blanket over the shots hit with Pings. I am not kidding, I was way more consistent with them. They are 1" shorter than the RBZ, but I was hitting the Ping G20 within 1 yd of the RBZ for distance.

The one thing that is firmly implanted in my brain is the tremendous feel of the G20 hybrids and the nice , tight, higher than average trajectory (good for soft landing into greens).

I have been all over the map with hybrids, and now, feel I found one that I can play with on a regular basis. After hitting them for a while, you get over the alternative look of them, mainly because of their performance and feel. Feel, feel, feel feel. They just feel great.

I played a Par 3 with all of the clubs, hitting 3 balls with each hybrid directly into the sun, so you couldn't see the shots. When I got to the greens, I counted 7 balls on the green. One ball from RBZ, Adams, Callaway and Titleist. 3 balls on the green were hit with the Ping G20. That did it for me!!!!!

I'm sold. G20's in my bag for the rest of this year!!!!!!

Hey man, I'm the dude

I had the K15 hybrid, and everytime I pulled it for a shot, I couldn't stand looking at it. That giant toe shaped head the ping G15, k15, and G20 is a big distraction to me.

Went back to the G10 and am very happy with the more traditional shape.

I'll take a look at the i20 soon.

i20's are really a great hybrid as well. Very solid feel at impact and it comes with multiple shaft options.

I've tried so many hybrids over the last 2-3 years. I battle with inconsistency in my game which dramatically affects my scores, and in no club is it more evident than my inability to hit a fairway wood cleanly. I'm one of the rare higher handicappers than can hit a 3 iron better than any hybrid. Perhaps in my mind, I try to focus on two main swings, one for my driver, and one for my irons so swing the fairway wood feels like I'm adding a third swing. As such, I played horribly with any hybrid that more wood than iron. I finally tried the g20/g15 hybrids at a local Golf Town and I was amazed. Not only did I gain so much more confidence in the club due to its iron-like appearance, I was getting a consistent 175 yd carry (201 yd with roll-out) in the simulator with the 17*. Odd thing is that I was getting the exact same results with the 17* and 20*, so I have a decision to make which as to which type of ball-flight I need since distance is exactly the same. Great club though, I found my new hybrid and can't wait to pick one up.

I think what the G15/G20 proves is that there are markets for both wood-like, and iron-like hybrids. We may not get both out of each manufacturer, but Ping seems to have that niche down right now. Very similar in concept to the old Callaway X-tour driving iron, or Mizuno Fli-Hi clubs of yore.

I think the design pf the G20 Hybrid makes the club appear more like an iron than a Hybrid at address, so I think you put an iron swing on it, and that's real key in hitting a Hybrid. Allot of the Hybrids look like mini fairway woods and it can really cause you to put your fairway wood swing on it, and that produces not so good results. That's what I have gained from the G20 Hybrid. They are a really fine club!!!!!

Well I've had the 4 hybrid in my bag for awhile now and it looks like I will be selling it. It just does not fit my eye, I guess playing the wood like hybrids has ruined me. Good luck with yours.

The Ping Hybrids aren't for everyone.

But, for me, I have always been a Ping iron guy. I just have never had a hybrid I have ever liked and never thought I'd have these ugly G20's in my bag.

But, I love them......for me, I find them way better than anything else I have tried, and I have tried them all.

To each his own!!!

Interesting. I was fit for the G20's a couple of months ago through observation and an indoor launch monitor along with a full set of clubs. I do like the look and I do like the feel.

But I was put in the in the SR shaft that I think is way too tip soft for me. Though I hit the G20's generally easily in my 20 handicap, I can't get any kind of consistent distance on the clubs (I bought the 27, 23 and 20). And like you on the simulator, in real play, my 4 often goes only as far as my 5 on good hits, the 3 as far as my 4 on a good hit. Sometimes less, and that really baffles me. The ball carries well but sometimes just goes "poof" for what I often expect to be a great result from what I see for projected carry for any of them.

I'm also getting easily around 10 yards less than I would have expected in my most recent equivalent Taylormade clubs even 6 months ago (ok Taylomade is a degree stronger) , or my Adams prior to that. I accept my swing may have slowed a bit in the last year, but it is also generally a better and longer swing.

Yesterday I nutted a 4H that took off like a rocket, and high (I was going over trees) and probably with the best distance ever, but I don't think my swing was anything really different. Maybe I slowed it a bit and kept quiet hands for good height over the trees. Later I hit my 3H that seemed to go great but landed (no roll in wet) a good 20 yards less than anticipated the way the swing and hit felt. That's not uncommon with any of the three clubs.

Compounded is that the 5H is a 27 degree; my 6 iron is 28. ( It's 29 degree 6 iron in the G20's) . So there is not much gain at all in the 5H. And I've got a gap at the other end between my 3H and 5 wood. Not to mention the doubts how far they go period on on good hit.

For now, I'm playing my 4H like a 5, 3H like a 4H for distance. The fitter is trying to work a solution. He is installing a more penetrating shaft in the 5H to see if that helps. If so, we'll do the same in the 4 and 3. Another option is that we will scrap the 5H and go with a G20 2 Hybrid (assuming it goes what I would expect a 3 to go, so it doesn't cause a gap issue the other way with my 5 wood). I still will be wanting a boring shaft in all three though I think.

Sound like a plan??? Sound familiar to anyone else with these puppies?
