How much will an extra 15 grams effect my swing

Recommended Posts

I have an opportunity to pick up a great 3 wood and 5 wood but with shafts that are about 15 grams heavier than I normally play (72 and 75 vs 60). My current driver swing speed is about 94mph.

Will I notice a big diffence in weight and start hitting everything right as a result of not being able to turn the club over or will I be OK with the extra weight?

the clubfitting factor that most typically affects how quick you are with your tempo is the swingweight before it would be the total weight (shaft weight is the most contributory element to total weight). if the golfer senses that he cannot feel the presence of the head weight enough, he has a tendency to get too quick, especially in the start of the downswing and even in the takeaway to start the swing. So if you sense that you keep telling yourself to slow down, add some more weight to the head using lead tape and keep doing that until you start to feel enough lag or headweight that you are not fighting the proper timing of the start of the downswing.

I agree with PingG10guy in that having heavier shafts in my hybrids and fairways has REALLY helped me to feel the club through the whole swing. It also helps me to control my traj. better when I'm taking my reps. (my good friend Eldrick told me to say that...) But seriously, I play S300 in both my 3 wood and Hybrid and LOVE it. I can hit a burning wind cheater a lot easier than any graphite shaft I've played while still being able to add height to a shot when necessary.

The best thing I ever did was put 96 gram shafts in my FW's. 75 is still pretty light. 60 must have been a great deal or you bit on the marketing lighter goes faster stuff.

I would consider 75 pretty standard for a FW shaft

What's your swing speed. My driver swing speed is 94 MPH which is why 75 feels heavy to me and no, I'm not a big believer in light goes farther!

107-108ish

I play an untipped X-flex in my woods. the reason i said lighter goes faster is because most people do pick up some speed with lighter equipment. I end up spraying it all over the place. just my personal opinion though.

You wont know until you try it out i guess.

My tempo ranges from a little bit too quick to way, way too quick. For me a change from 60g to 75g fairway wood shafts would probably be a good thing. In fact, I have never really gotten along with under-75g shafts in hybrids and fairways. Even in a driver I like maybe 65g or so although I did have a Cleveland Launcher years ago with a 55g shaft (but that thing was so long I had no choice but to slow down, I wasn't strong enough to swing it fast at 46" or whatever the heck it was).

I think it's worth a try. You may really like it. And I don't think there's any advantage per se to very light fairway wood shafts, it's pretty much whatever feels best to you.

I made some swings with my new i20 driver the other day. Project X Black 6.0 (57 gram) versus the UST tour V2 86/96 gram Ive been using in my drivers/FW and it felt terrible. Yes the shaft was a bit soft compared to my current stuff but still. No bueno.

Lighter go faster is really a bad way to look at it if youre a fast tempo downswing guy. Ive always trashed the idea on golfwrx but I gave myself an oppertunity to be wrong yesterday by actually trying it. That's something we see a lot on golfwrx; people giving opinions on stuff they never really tried. I guess if my swing was perfect then i could get a good high towering ballflight out of it. But for now I need the weight. It keeps me in check.

I never believe anything until I try it. All it took was 20+ rounds with a lovely set of graphite-shafted Callaway X-20's to convince me that lighter and more flexible is not always better, even for a weak and slow swing like mine. I'm better off swinging too-heavy, too-stiff clubs at a semi-reasonable tempo than "flipping" and overswinging at a set that the conventional wisdom might say is better suited to my game.

Then again, when I first started playing golf and had my teaching pro fit me for a set of irons his advice was "Whatever irons you ever get, stick to the heavy steel shafts. Oh and SLOW DOWN a little!". Apparently, my tempo has not improved any in the 15 years since...
