Hot black oxide question

I have a firend that works in a metal plating shop and will refinish an old Cameron Oil Can for free, if I like. He said that in order to do a black oxide finish, it first needs to be copper plated. Does this sound right? Anyone have any other ideas that I can give him on how this can be done?

Black oxide is applied directly to the steel.

Yeah, no copper plating for black oxide. Copper plating is a step performed after cleaning and stripping parts to be chrome plated, the copper fills in fine scratches a bit like primer does when painting a car.

ask danattherock about this one. he had a yamada that was copper plated with black ox over it. not common in the world of scotty cameron/tp mills/bettinardi, but not unheard of in the rest of the universe.

The issue is that copper plating is not a prerequisite for black oxide.

Agreed. I think the situation is that his shop ONLY does hot black oxide of copper and brass. Hence, why he wanted to copper plate first. I decided to to do a cold blueing instead and the results are pretty good. Will post pictures tonight after the paintfill is cleaned up.

If you can, please share some pictures of the oxide treated copper and brass. I have not seen any of that sort of work and would love to see the effects.
The fact that his shop only oxides copper and brass is unusual, but not unheard of. I wonder if it takes a different formula of oxide that the one that guys use on steel. Anyone out there have an answer to that?
Looking forward to seeing some pictures of your cold blue job.

no idea as to the answer, but see if you can find danattherock's thread on trying to change his yamada emporer from smoke to burning copper.

Here are the pictures of the putter with a DIY cold blue finish. I soaked the head in vinegar to remove all of the original finish (there wasn't hardly any left) and rust (which there was a lot of). I did about 5 coats of Perma Blue with steel wool and degreasing in between coats. Paint-filled with cheap nail polish (I will use better paint at a later date) and coated it with a liberal amount of baby oil. Best part... I only paid $50 for the putter with an original like-new headcover! Not too shabby but I could definately do better. Next, I'll give it the heated Plum Brown treatment. Until then, enjoy.

Not sure what steel wool it was... 000, maybe? I just grabbed the first thing I saw in the tool chest. As far as the degreaser, I used denatured alcohol. I was going for an old, "rainbow" case-hardened look. Like I said, not perfect, at all but it was a learning experience.
