Feedback on swing

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I am fairly new to posting on the forum, but I would like to get feedback on a couple swings I took recently. I am currently a 10 handicap and I have never taken a lesson, but plan to in the near future. I have noticed a couple things in my swing that maybe you can help me with.

1. Left arm is bent during impact

2. Don't use right foot to push (it seems)

3. I get parallel on my woods / driver, not irons

Basic swing information: Driver club speed 121. (Golf Galaxy, don't know accuracy), Titleist 712 AP2 w/ x100 shafts (std.) / Quick transition from top of swing.

please take a look and let me know what you think. Thanks

This one has two swings with the 5 iron and the commentary was because it was about to storm...just a heads up.

your leaning forward at the top of your backswing. your weight should be on the inside of your right heel at the top of your backswing.

your grip also looks very strong, which is causing your clubface to be shut when your arms are parallel to the ground.

also looks like you are snapping the club inside. You really need to hinge your wrists upward to get the club working through your right forearm instead of under it.

what type of shots do you usually hit?

My 3 wood is the best club in my bag and I usually can hit that straight and draw it when needed. My misses are usually a slight fade or I have been known to push my irons a little bit. I have been told of my grip but about the other tips not so much. Can you explain the wrists a little more please?

i wouldnt really worry about your wrists, its really not that bad.

you should really concentrate on your turn/transition/balance, throughout the swing.

it is extremely important to have your upper body tilted away from the target by 6-8 degrees at address and through contact. if not you will restrict your hip rotation. fixing this would help fix your fade and give you more distance/ smoothness throughout the swing.

a side view of your swing from a little farther back would be more helpful as well.

I would take a guess that your misses are fat or pushes.

You have a nice athletic swing... you come from inside, it seems like you compress the ball well.

I would offer a tip of relaxing your back some. The DTL view on the top I see your back is flexed and stiff before you start the swing, my personal goals are to minimize tension throughout the swing. Something in your stance looks tense before you start.

Also you drop your head like the pros on the way back and impact, nice job. I think with practice your hcp should drop significantly

I don't know if I fully understand what you mean by this. Are you referring to the right shoulder lower than the left at address? I will take a couple more clips and post sometime this weekend if it cools down a little.

  • 2 weeks later...

Here are a few more videos from further away. It will start with the 56 degree then 7 Iron and finish with the 3 wood slightly teed up. Hopefully this shows things a little bit better. Any feedback is welcome.

A fish hook shape is when your left elbow buckles and you hold that shape after impact. This is why you are missing right. I asked if you miss left because it feels like you want to keep that clubhead from turning naturally at all costs.

I dont suggest taking it further back for power, your legs are already providing you a lot of power obviously. I suggest increasing your shoulder turn for accuracy.

If you get your large muscles activated during your swing, you will get into better positions more consistently. You already do a great job with your legs. So you always have that feel to rely on. But if you barely turn your shoulders on the scoring irons, then your small muscles are taking over for you.

I know it is counter intuitive, but that's golf!

Thanks for the feedback and that is exactly the answer I was looking for. I have had this issue with my left elbow forever and I don't know how to correct it. I looked at the vids in slow motion and noticed each time my left arm is bent at impact. Are there drills I can do to help prevent this or is it a matter of shoulder turn? I have this problem with all my clubs including my 3 wood and driver.

You could always try the lee westwood approach. Lee looks like he is going to fishook his left arm but his elbow then seemingly pulls his entire torso spectacularly around. Lee westwood is one of the best trappers that has ever lived. Skip to minute 6 for the good stuff about the left arm.
