Refinished Studio Select Laguna 2 Darkened Stainless / Black Paintfill

Here is my latest project i just completed. I've always wanted to Laguna 2 because on the back where it says "Scotty Cameron", the letters are filled with a light gray color and it doesn't have a lot of contrast to the stainless steel. I've always felt that they missed an opportunity to make it look better by not filling those letters with their trademark translucent red color to make it pop.

 

Anyways, my favorite way to refinish Studio Selects in darkening the stainless steel and doing a black paintfill. I also get the most compliments with this look. Here are some pictures of the finished product.

Yes, it was darkened with Caswell's Stainless Steel Darkener. I always get great results with it.

Do you have to remove the original finish first?

There is no actual original finish. It is just stainless steel.

My experience in putter refinishing is trial and error mostly. I learned quite a bit from others on this forum. I've always been good at working with my hands and I love golf, so I decided to combine the two and and restore and refinish golf clubs.

There are instructions that come with the Darkener that explain how to do it.

Basically you clean it and make sure there is no oil or fingerprints on it. Then dip it in muriatic acid, which you can get at any Home Depot or pool supply store. Then dip it in the Darkener for about 30 seconds. To make sure the putter is darkened evenly, dip some steel wool in the Darkener and lightly rub the steel wool over the club. You can repeat dipping it in the Darkener a couple of times.

After you are happy with the color, use some type of penetrating sealer. Caswell makes this but you can use a product like liquid wrench or any other silicone based penetrating sealer.

That's basically it. Also make sure to wear gloves. Also, the smell is god awful. It smells like a tart swamp taint. So I do this outside and wear a mask. It doesn't have to be a big mask, just something simple.
