Miura PP-9003, Straight Neck?!

Recommended Posts

I got an email from Miura the other day, they made a very limited number of sets of the Passing Point PP-9003 with no offset. I had to read the email twice to make sure I was reading it correctly. I requested some pics and will post them if I get them.

What do you guys think, Miura's game improvement iron with no offset?

Isn't that a cb-501? I guess the head is a couple millimeters bigger, but it seems odd.

14 Pings. Blueprints are incredibly good. Fetch is the most underrated putter on the market. Don't @ me.

I think it is a solid idea. That was my beef with the normal PP-9003. I understand that maybe for a majority, offset adds playability...but for some of us that need perimeter weighting but don't do well with offset, it can be a disaster. Props to Miura for making things like this accessible.

I always wanted to see a more forgiving club design but with "no" offset. I just looks much better and feels easier to aim. I always thought that a few millimeters of offset can't make any difference when a clubhead is swishing through at 90 Mph..Feels like a hoax. It just makes the club look ugly and unbalanced.

I've seen a completed set of the Passing Points with no offset and have been eyeing up a set of heads at my Miura Dealer. The PP's are very good feeling and very forgiving but to my eye, they just never quite fit. Now this new no offset set has been released and it's definitely very tempting.

I found a set of these heads (even though I wasn't looking for them!) and am having them shafted up. Does any body know how much less offset there is compared to the regular ones? You can tell just by looking that there's considerably less but still just a hair. Was just wondering if anyone had the actual FP or offset numbers of each.

It's not per-club, but here's what I was able to find for the Miura Giken PP-9003s (own and love 'em):

Face Progression (mm) 1.2(#4)~3.3(Gw)

I believe face progression is the JDM term correlating to offset. Enjoy them!

Thanks for that info. I'm guessing the non-offset ones would have maybe 1-1.5 mm more face progression. FP is the distance from the center of the hosel to the leading edge. Kind of the inverse of offset, which is the diff from leading (far left) edge of the hosel to the leading edge of the face. I saw a thread on here once where a guy was berating JDM cuz their wedges and and short irons had more offset than the longer irons and how that didn't make sense. He didn't realize that it was face progression he was talking about, not offset.

My new PP 9003 straight neck black boron irons are supposed to arrive at my clubmaker some time near the end of next week. I am currently playing the CB501 with a aerotech i95 regular shaft. I am going by Saturday for some fitting to see if I could go with the i80 shaft with these PP's. Hopefully I will be able to sell the CB501's if I like the PP's better. I love the way both look but since I am 60 and have lost some swing speed the last few years I thought I would try both and see which one I like better..........and take the beating on the resell of the other one like a man....Yes I will try and get some pics up when I get these bad boys in my hands.

Since there seems to be a lot of peeps here that appreciate good clubs I thought I would try to see if anyone would be interested in the set I decide to sell. Of course I need to read up on the proper protocol for selling clubs on this site....I am not one to break any rules and want to be known as a man of integrity....even though it is my first post.

So the PP9003 Straight necks are very nice - really dependable. The feel is softer than my CB 501s, providing a very substantial compression feeling - hit the PP and the 501 can seem a touch firmer for sure. Very confidence inspiring after a few swings and decent flight, albeit I have a lighter shaft in the PPs than in the 501s (Aerotech 80 vs 95 gram respectively) tends to send the ball a bit higher. For my swing the higher lofted head of the 501 X 95 gram shaft yields ideal flight. But the PPs do not need the same quality swing as the 501s to yield very passable results.

Distance is about the same - I am anxious to see the flight with the 95 gram shaft, but right now I have my easy swinging set and my more demanding set.

I'm in a bit of a conundrum now about whether to swap the 80gram shaft for the 95 or just keep it.

Anyone know if heads alone are available for purchase and if so how much? I'd like a set of forged GI sized heads, something like these without tons of offset and a classic look.

I don't want to order a custom set. I'm just interested in the PP-9300 SN heads.

Picked up a set of the regular 9003's this weekend. Got them from a friend that spends most of the year in Japan and often brings back JDM market clubs (Miura's mostly) to sell in the states. They had Modus 120 shafts, which I pulled and put in BST, and installed a spare set of Recoil's. Going to give them a go tomorrow and looking forward to it.

Not sure if anyone is interested but...

Installed Recoil 110's into the 9003's Saturday afternoon and put the clubs in play Sunday morning. No range time.

First shot was a smooth little 135 yard 9 iron to the middle of the second green that hit and stopped quickly. Missed the birdie putt of course. Had a similar shot on the fourth hole, this time to about 15'. So far so good. Impact feel was firm, but not harsh. I understand what people say when talking about "Miura feel" now.

Skipping ahead, I hit 6 iron into two of the par three's that measured about 187 and wound up hitting the green but just (front side). Both strikes were a little towards the toe side with a loopy right to left ball flight (one of my more common misses). Impact feel on these shots told me that I missed the center of the face but they were not overly harsh.

After reshafting the clubs I checked loft and lie and loft was dead nuts on the money. The lie's were a little more random but I wanted to tweak them anyway no worry. The lofts themselves are 1* weaker than my Mizuno Hot Metal's in the 5-8 irons. I was expecting shorter distances but to be honest, I was a little surprised to have lost so much distance. Had one shot that was 155 so I grabbed the 8 iron only I had to work the shot a little higher than normal to be sure to clear a tree and that shot came up about 5 yards short of the green. Not one of my better strikes but clearly these clubs are going to take some adjustment to figure out.

Overall I enjoyed playing the clubs. They remind me of Mizuno MX-23 only a little more elegant. They don't help your misses much, but they aren't blades or anything. I'll post back after a few more rounds if anyone is interested. Good fun.
