My BYRON center shafted MINI DH-89...."0311"

BLUF....(bottom line up front)

I'm an active duty Marine stationed in San Diego but only for a few more months and only 63 miles from Byrons shop so I decided it was time for my Byron experience prior to my move back to boring Ohio. Titleist-Golfer's GSS build thread helped motivate me as well.

 

My first visit to Byron's shop was amazing, hundreds of beautiful putter art pieces in all stages of the process. Overwhelming in sense that there are so many options to choose from, anything you can possibly imagine in a putter is available to you from Mr. Morgan.

 

I went in set on a Bombora Rockpile head but unsure of what neck I wanted. I spent some time talking with Byron about the different neck options, my current putter and what I like about it (Seemore FGP this month) I started fooling around with and drooling over some of the many designs he had laying around.

 

My eyes soon focused on a lonely little DH-89 head sitting all by itself on 1 of the racks. We temporarily taped it up to a shaft and stroked a few on his extremely difficult putting green with a not so noticeable break and a not so regulation size hole. I sank quite a few and quickly fell in love with the look and feel of the lonely little head.

 

My plans quickly changed from the Rockpile that I had originally wanted to this MINI DH-89. I wanted to keep it simple but personalize with a small tribute to my service in the Marine Corps .

 

STAMPINGS:

I named it "RUNT" simply from my first site of the head. Amongst hundreds of finished and in the process of being finished BYRON putters I found this diamond in the rough all alone and oh so small....basically the definition of a runt.

 

The small G stamped in front of RUNT makes it read GRUNT as well, however not many will be able to put the word GRUNT together with the 0311 on the bumpers and know the meaning.

 

0311 is my MOS (military occupational specialty) code for Rifleman/Infantry

We in the 0311 Infantry community are also referred to as GRUNTS, the original meaning of grunt was used for troops in WW2 who had no formal training. G-general R-replacement UNT-untrained but the term has carried with us and still used today although the amount of training we have is beyond belief. The opposite of a grunt is a POG (personnel other than grunt) and they sometimes take that in a very offensive way but we 0311's are extremely proud of the term grunt.

 

Anyway back to my Byron experience. Byron's shop is a special place, almost a sort of temple to the avid passionate golfer with an appreciation for what he does. It was a pleasure to work with and converse with Byron. I almost felt bad for asking so many questions but I was like a kid in a candy store while there. He was more than happy to fulfill my curiosity and educate me on anything I wanted to know.

Cool putter. I just received my first Byron a month or so ago and have my next one planned already. I bought the DH89 and had some custom shaping but the next putter with be a Da Kine with some custom shaping. It is going to be perfectly what I want. The DH89 feels great but i wish it was just a little thicker, which the Da Kine will be.

Thanks guys, it feels great, looks amazing and inspires loads if confidence while standing over it.
Just knowing that it was made for me and there are no others the same helps me approach putts with an entirely different attitude.
Putting will never be the same, no more off the rack retail putters.
