Bump & run with 9/PW/SW...question on tour technique

...there's a shot the pros hit, ***need advice***

There is a bump and run type shot tour players hit with these lofted clubs...right off the green or up to 5 yards off the green....the ball carries about half the distance (or more) and then runs a good 12-20 feet. It is DIFFERENT than a bump and run with a 6 or 7 or 8...as the clubs fans open a bit and then closes naturally. Good loft and then soft landing with full roll.

Any advice on hitting this?

It is sort of a "dead hands" bump and run but with the club fanning open and then closing back to square at impact.

It is a shot I have never really had down...need to add to my repetoire.

It may be a shot that is more applicable to the conditions the PGA Tour play on...

 

Who have you been watching specifically hit the shot?

Allowing the face to close will add a type of hook spin to the shot, and will cause the ball to run out more

than keeping the face square through impact.

I use this shot alot as i play links golf just remeber to keep your hands infront of the ball.Most people at my club dont and overhit or are way offline.Just think about where you want to land it and what club is going to give you the amount of roll you require and remember take all slopes into account.

Exactly. Half of the shots that those guys play really can't be played on the courses we play because our courses are too soft and not fast enough, and if we could play them, we'd need different clubs to pull off what they do.

Play the ball back, off your right foot

Position hands just a smudge inside the left thigh

IMPORTANT: Make sure the club face has toe DOWN--ie overly flat lie, the heel of the club should be about

1/4"-1/2' off the ground

Square clubface at address too your target area/spot

Just use a normal putting stroke with your iron--cannot stress this enough

 

 

This was taught to me by a very good friend of Mr Floyd's & it works PERFECT!

 

I was taught to use an open stance and play the ball back more when using the SW/lob

It puts just enough spin for soft landing, yet it rolls out
