Sound slot with a dremel?

Recommended Posts

I want to try a sound slot but don't want to ship off my putter. Could it be done with a dremel? Any tips?

I would practice on an old putter first. But would obviously like a few hints if possible

Interesting... I had some mod work done for me recently that could've been done with a dremel... I guess if you put together a jig to hold it and control the cut it could be done. I'd rather have it done properly if it were me though. You figure there are a nice handful of guys who do this sort of thing professionally so why not support them with your patronage! Save some time and a few putters?

I feel like I could put together a jig fairly easily… It's just if there is a Dremel blade that would make a clean-cut Through stainless. I'm sure somebody has done it on here and could show me some pictures. I have thought about sending it into one of the guys that do it professionally, but I don't have that kind of money, And wouldn't mind having the fast turnaround of doing it myself

I am actually touching up my car with spray paint this summer. Haha

I think I'm going to try to find a cheap putter at gw to practice on.

I have done it a couple of times with this attachment for the Dremel tool. http://www.dremel.co...il.aspx?pid=231

Take a similar model putter with a sound slot and set the depth of the tool with the router table attachment using the similar old putter with the sound slot. You can adjust how far the tool goes up or down in the attachment to adjust how far back from the face the slot is. Use a round Dremel cutting wheel with the face of the putter flat on the top of the router table attachment and have at it. You use the router fence to control the depth of the cut up into the head of the putter. Since the table is at 90 degrees to the cutting blade you have to make a really small adjustment for the face angle of the putter. One putter usually chews up one cutting blade in my experience. Unfortunately I moved recently and still haven't found the box with the putter heads that I have done this to. I was careful, took my time and set it up correctly and it turned out fine for me. The times I did it I was very happy with the results and I am pretty picky about my putters. The sound slots that I did went all the way through the bottom of the putter just behind the face in the back cavity. If you have an old putter to practice on I would receommend trying it on an old beater first, but it most definitely can be done with a Dremel tool using the attachment linked above as the jig you are referring to. Good Luck!

Best wishes!
Sean

You really need something to hold it in place FIRMLY as others have suggested. It's hard enough to keep the thing in the grooves on the face of a wedge. if you have the same cutting wheels as I've commonly seen for the dremel (with the spring loaded twisty top) you'll burn through them pretty quickly, and you'll have the dremel cranked up pretty high and will be wondering if its going to explode.

I ended up not doing it. I might do it some day on my old byron, but I found another putter to mess with in the meantime.

Why not buy a cheap chop saw at harbor freight or something to use? LOL. Though I'd like to see the Dremel destruction. Make sure to video it if it ever happens.

Will do haha I saw a cheap putter at goodwill today so maybe ill go back for it, or I'll go dig through the cart barn tomorrow night at work.

For what you are going to spend on a cheap putter and dremel bits/wheels, I'm sure you could find a local machinist who could do a little "government job" for a case of beer, even some small machine shops would probably do it for less than what it costs me to take my 3 kids out for Happy Meals

sorry to revive an old thread, but yes, I have done it. Granted it was not stainless but rather carbon steel. I used a round cutting blade on the end of a dremel and it left small portions on the ends of the slot that did not cut through, so ended up using a tiny drill bit to open it all the way up and semi-smooth it out
