wedge flex? Right or Rubbish!

Recommended Posts

I play regular flex shafts but play stiff/wedge flex in wedges but I read recently that you want to play the same flex or err on the softer side of the flex you play with irons.

Right or Rubbish!?

I just got two wedge heads--Miura 51* Y and 56* K; fitting for my PP-9003 was KBS regular and wondering if I should go with same flex as my irons.

Thanks for any replies!

Greg

"wedge" flex is a stocking compromise from the largest seller of wedges: Cleveland, who sells their wedges in every sporting goods store in the USA. Most of those places do not know what flex means and do not need to stock choices. But they being number one, we all thinks of "wedge" flex or stiff as normal for wedges.

Hey, look, I never knew Martin Hall posted on GolfWRX. IMO, its personal preference. Ive played r-flex shafts in my wedges in the past and didnt notice any difference, other than the shafts felt whippier.

I play regular in all my clubs. I had some wedges with stiff shafts in them but they felt too heavy.

Almost all wedges you see in stores have stiff shafts but I lucked out and found some and found some with regulars.

My Titleist MB710's have DG 400S Tour Issue shafts and I am loading DG 100X Tour Issue 8 Iron shafts into my Vokey Wedges. The Swing Weights are D2 in my 3-PW, D3 in my 52, D4 in my 56 and D5 in my 58. I'm going to try a KBS Tour 8 shaft in a Vokey 64 this week. If the results are interesting I'll write about it...

Haha, man, sometimes Im so lucky. After tipping my Iron Set 3/8 of an inch, I was thinking about doing the same to my wedges. But now, Im convinced it perfect the way it is. They still feel great and I loved them all along. If I have a bad shot I know it was me right away.
Thankyou

The best way to decide on the flex YOU should use is an honest assessment...do you swing your wedges with a full swing or is it more of a controlled 3/4 swing? If a full swing, go with the same as your irons, if a controlled swing you want slightly softer. I have done hundreds of wedge fittings on a range, not in a hitting bay indoors, and have found that 90% of all golfers, including pros, when hitting different weights and flex shafts, choose anywhere from a half flex to a full flex softer. This is based on feel, not ego. I never tell you in a fitting what shaft or flex you are hitting, just ask that you tell me how each one feels.

I am the South Florida rep for SCOR, so this is based on our philosophy of proper fitting, plus I have been a teaching pro specializing in the short game since 1989, but no matter what wedge you play, if it was bought off the rack...you more than likely have the wrong shaft. All those manufacturers are mass assembled in China...Vokey, Cleveland, etc...and they don't take the time or care to properly shaft. If you are currently playing a certain family of shafts, like DG, KBS, Nippon, PX, etc., definitely go 1/2 flex softer and same weight or one weight class heavier, and your wedge play will improve.

Remember, if you are swinging your wedges full like a 5 iron, the great Ben Hogan once said "Show me a guy hitting a wedge with a full swing and I want to play him for money...". The best wedge players on the PGA Tour use a 3/4 swing on their wedges, not a full swing. I hope this helps.

I normally recommend going softer in wedges 54 degrees and higher. The softer shaft tends to give people more feel, trajectory and spin.
