cheated death on golf course
has anyone ever had a near death experience on the golf course before.

Ive had golf balls wizzz by my head a few times. ill tell a few. One time a group of 4 of us were standing around a hole talking about who knows and a golf ball tee shot from a hole running parrallell landed right in middle of us, inches from missing our heads. Another time in golf practice me and my friend were walking ahead and to the left of a right hander HACKER and he straight up pulls it and it goes under the brim of my friends hat and about 1 cm from my nose. one more step forward and id be dead.

Pretty scary to think about. :) :superman:

How about actual death experiences?

Playing on Thansgiving morning, 1997 with my father and my father-in-law - just went out to play 6 holes, and grab breakfast - just the guys. Get to the 4th hole, and get near the green - my father-in-law goes down - looks like he sprained his ankle pretty badly - as I start to walk over, I notice that he's in trouble - I get to him, roll him over, and he breathes out - his last breath. I start CPR, and my fahter (who had a pacemaker) runs to call an ambulance. He never moved - he must have been dead before he hit the grass.

Now every Thanksgiving, we go out with a 7-iron (which he had in his hand) and a putter - we FINISH 4 holes, have a few beers, and remember him. Played the first 4 in 2 over this year - 7 iron and putter only...

Two years ago, my father passed away on November 12th. We went out to play our little 4 hole thing, and as we stood on #2 tee, we looked up at the clubhouse in the distance - over the clubhouse were two, not one, two rainbows - kind of spooky.

I have had times when I could hear the wind, but this was one of the best:

My uncle had about 150 into the green and said he was going to walk up, so I drove the cart over to the cart path, 30 yards or so, and was about that far forward too. He shanks the ball right at me so I laid down on the seat real quick and hear the ball brush fabric, but didn't feel a thing. So he comes walking over and we start looking for the ball. He said he lost it after it entered the cart and I told him I had my eyes closed in prayer, so we decide to give up looking. He is about to drop a ball when I notice a ball in my left pocket. Since I never carry one there I pulled it out and said, "Harry, you playing a TopFlite 0?" We both fell over laughing. I still have no idea how I didn't feel a thing.

How does one ever get over a parent dying? How did you?

Sorry for your loses...Glad to hear the tradtion is still going..Nice Story

I wasl hit by a line drive three wood in my left eye in 1996. If it wouldnt have hit me dead center in the eye socket (100+mph) it would have killed me. The bones around the orbit of the eye are so thick, that I was lucky it hit me there. I had what they call an "ORBITAL BLOWOUT" where the pressure inside my head caused my cheek bones to break outward. a After being rushed to the ER and having emergency surgery the specialist was able to save my eye. Get this..that wasnt even the worst part...the fracture in my cheek bone gets infected 3 months later and the read me my last rights..(parents and wife are going crazy) and rush me off for my fourth surgery. So now after 11 operations on my face and eye, the eye was saved, but my pupil stays dialated which makes me wear sun glasses almost all the time. And it ended the professional golf carrer that had just got started. Oh well, I am alive and have a wonderful wife, two kids (with one on the way)... so you never know when it could be your time!!!! :)

Location: About 30 feet left of the 12th green at Pebble Beach.

I was standing next to a teammate when he got hit in the head. It was very foggy and we never saw the ball coming, but I heard it. Then I hear what sounds like someone cracking open a coconut. I look at my teammate and his face and head are covered in blood. Our coach had his VW Bus and we rushed him to the hospital. He got a lot of stitches to seal it up, but that sound was a sound that I'll never forget.

May I ask where you were standing in relation to where the golf ball was hit?

I've been hit on off the bounce a few times but never a direct shot in the air. Knock on wood, I've been pretty lucky so far. I've heard of stories of people getting hit in the eye and blinded. I also saw a guy on a tee box and it looked like he was standing too close when someone was practice swinging. Laying on the ground, ambulance. I'm always careful whenever practice swinging and making sure I'm not in line of someone shot.

This is the first, and only time I have ever hit anyone on the golf course. The most sickening feeling ever.

A few years ago I was playing with some buddies and were on the tee of this mid-length par 5. The tee is about 50 feet above the fairway, so we can see everything. There's a foursome in front of us way down the hole near a creek that cuts through the fairway at about the 320 mark. 3 of them have hit their shots and are making their way across a bridge at the right side of the fairway. The 4th guy is trying to hit out of the front of this fairway trap down the righthand side about 20 yards short of the creek.

My buddies have all hit their tee shots, and I'm teeing up to hit mine, and I notice that buddy is still in the bunker after topping his first swing under the lip. I decide to go ahead and hit. He's 295-300 away, no problem. So I take my usual "healthy cut" at the ball. It was one of those swings where you hear the sound, but you don't feel it, right on the screws. The ball takes off down the right-center with tons of hangtime, but it starts leaking right, towards the guy in the trap. The first thing I think is, "that might get there" and I start screaming "FORE!!". Too late. I see the guy lurch forward and then collapse to his knees. The next thought is "OMG, I hit him in the head!". So we all pile into our carts and go screaming down the hill, meanwhile his wife has made her way back to him and is helping him up. I pile out of the cart and run over to see if he's okay. I feel like I'm going to puke (right after the guy wraps his club around my head). I'm apologizing like crazy. I've never carried a ball that far before, even downhill. He says he's okay, and he's smiling. He's actually impressed that someone hit the ball that far!! (I feel like fainting now) He lifts up his shirt and shows me this big, ugly welt on his lower back. We all made sure that he was alright, and they went on and finished their round. Funny, I don't remeber the rest of that round. But I do remember buying his group a couple of pitchers at the clubhouse afterwards. :)

I did not know that the Golf balls could be that dangerous. Doesn't the ball loses it's speed after it travels so far?

I'm not questioning anyone's story. It going to make me think twice before I hit a golf ball when there are people around me.

I did hit my wife with a golf ball, and no it was not on purpose.

I was using a pitching wedge to get it onto the green, Steph (my wife) was sitting in the golf cart. The cart was between my ball and the green. She wanted to move away, but I assured her that I was going to hit it over her, since I was using the PW club. Hehe.. I accidently hit a line drive and hit her on her theigh. Left a huge bruise. I laughed, after I made sure she was ok, but now I really feel bad. Like I said in the beginning, I did not really think how dangerous a golf ball can be.

This past year I was in the fairway in a park style course where the fairways run parallel. I don't remember much of the details of it but someone from the other fairway yelled "FOREEEE" so I turned to see them and see the ball coming line drive fashion right at my head. I managed to duck out of the way just in time. I think I woulda been dead that ball was like a missile. Needless to say I made best efforts to hit into their group for the rest of the day.

This is how it went..There was a single (he had the tee time). I was on staff with PING (Mini Tour) and they had just sent me the new ISI NIckel to try out. Got to the course and it was busy, so me and my three friends joined him. We were in the middle of the 7th hole (par 4 340yds.) and we all teed off. I (driving the cart) was on the right side of the fairway in the cart @ about the 150 yrd marker. I looked up and saw the group in front of us (Still on the green) putting the flag in the cup, and started to drive back across the fairway. Well low and behold the single (who was at the 170 yrd marker decided to hit while they were still on the green. He screamed "look out" ...which I looked in the direction of the scream, and It hit me in the eye. So I guess it was a line drive 3 wood from 20 +- yards. It didnt knock me out. I just kinda stumbled out of the cart and yelded for help. NICE DAY huh?

Don't know if you ever do get over the death of a parent - I haven't yet - I still think of him every day - many times a day, and I still talk about him to my kids, so they don't forget him. I guess you just learn that you have to go on - life is pretty short - you need to be there for your family - and I'm sure therer is a lot of my father in me...

As a ranger in college I had quite a few balls bounce off the cart I was riding in. Probably good aim on the players part but here is a true story (abbreviated) that happed about 6 years ago.

Long story very short. The preist that married me was a very cool guy and asked to play golf. Keep in mind, i am not very religious. We're on the 13th hole walking to his ball. He looks at me and says, "why are all these angels here?" And then..no lie..falls on the ground and dies.

Like I said, I wouldn't belie it if it didn't happen to me. I am still a little freaked out by it

I hit someone too. It was hillarious actually, well kinda. I was playing a qualifying round last fall and there were some kids on the same hole we were playing. They knew we were qualifying so the waved us to go ahead and hit through. The were a good 300 out on the left side and since i had set up for a little draw(im a lefty)I gave it know thought that they were in my range. So i hit my driver down the left side where they were standing. The kids saw this and bolted for the right side. However they failed to notice the ball drawing to the right. I as bad as it is to hit someone, i was amazing to watch that thing track the one kid like a homing missle. It hit him in the back of his head and landed in his bag. He said he was fine so we kinda had a big laugh about it. Still to this day one of my favorite golf shots that I have hit. even though it was all by chance

I once hit a guy with a drive on an uphill par 5....he was in the rough on a parallel hole. The ball bounce right before him and kinda popped up and hit him. I guess it didn't hurt him at all because he kinda just looked around for a second and then kept playing...i never even got a chance to say sorry. As for me being hit Ive only been hit once. My friend skulled a bunker shot and i was standing on the green and it hit me in the leg...hurt and left a bruise but no biggie. On a few occasions I have ducked out of the way of incoming balls at my head but, knock on wood, have never been hit bad.

Still somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 mph. Hard enough that if it hits you in the right spot it can do serious harm, or even kill.

It was a links course by the ocean in Australia on the west tip of Port Phillip Bay, Barwon Heads. It was a pretty big pairs tournament and everyone was a good player. We were on the next tee which was a good 40 metres from the green.

The wind was strong. e.g. 7 iron for me became a 4 iron. So the hole that we just played was into the wind and the green has like a turtle's back. Let's just say having a head wind and seeing a Pinehurst No.2 shaped green makes you want to hit it dead straight.

As we were standing on the next tee, someone yells out "FORE!" I duck for cover and covered my head with my hands. You know it's like an atomic bomb: "Just remember kids, if you see a bright flash, duck and cover." Anyway, luckily I ducked because that thing would have got me square in the head. Instead it clipped the edge of my cap.

I wasn't angry. They called out fore. I just laughed at my good fortune.

Oh BTW, we ended up winning the tournament with a birdie-putt-from-off-the-green-and-up-and-down-par-save-from-a-deep-and-small-pot-bunker.

Take care

Josh

One of my buddies got hit in the head with a wedge shot that someone skulled. The other pair was on the left side of the fairway, and my buddy pulled us up too far forward on the right to where his shot was. Right as I said "Steve, don't you think we're (too far forward)" I heard "FORE!!!!" and then a loud crack. I thought the cart go thit till he lurched out of the cart and staggered around. Ball had linedrived into his forehead, leaving a hell of a mark where the visor meets the main part of the cap. Left him with one helluva bruise. Oddly enough, he played the next 3 holes better after being hit than he'd played the first part of the round.

well a guy in our town had been missing and skipped court and was missing for a month. Well he parked his car at our club which promptd this so about a month into his disappeance the members start complaining of a smell comming from #4 woods. Well no one thought anything of it until one morning a groundskeeper is picking up trash and notices something on the tee box, goes over to get the "trash" and instead its a human skull. Call the police, about 50 police come, shut down the whole course because the guy hung himself in the woods and i guess an animal dragged it out on the tee box.. Pretty weird to think i walked by that spot a good 30 times.

This was a story that happened to my uncle. He hit a 3 wood at a driving range up north, and he had his young neice there. Well he hits a low shot with his 3-wood, and it hits a pole, coming straight back, hitting her(his neice) right between the eyes. That is a very close call for both of them...

Now myself, i have had balls hit close to me, and the people didn't yell FORE.
