Pacific Grove Golf Course

Has anyone else played at Pacific Grove Golf Course in Monterey, Ca? I'm heading up there to play next month. Yes I can't afford the real Pebble Beach. What are your thoughts about the course?

Great course if a tad overrated. From what I remember the front 9 are a pretty standard bunch of muni holes, but then the back 9 are standard muni holes that happen to be on a cliff overlooking the Monterey Bay.

Do yourself a favor and plug "Pacific Grove" into that search bar at the top. You will see that it is a crowd favorite around here. Front 9 is nothing special, back 9 has amazing views. Great value at around $40, and not sure why the guy above me says it's "overrated."

The 6 true links holes on the back make it all worth while, regardless of how you feel about the other dozen holes.
Apart from Bandon, it's the only place I know of on the West Coast where you can actually play bump and run shots as they are meant to be played and they come off just as you'd expect from a course across the pond.

Playing Spyglass and Pasatiempo over July 4th weekend with a friend from out of town and I am planning on taking him to Pacific Grove too. It's great fun.

Just played Pacific Grove for the first time. At $68 + $10 for the 17th hole-in-one bet to benefit local high school sports (take an extra club, the left-to-right wind is weird on this hole), it is probably worth the dough for the views, history and character of the place alone. Don't go if you want a hallowed golf experience. Like mentioned above, the front nine is largely played on a short, interesting muni that could be just about anywhere dirt, grass and big, fat ball sucking trees grow. I would guess locals love the front 9 because of the learning curve. Lots of blind shots that leave you muttering under your breath when you arrive at your ball.

Then you cross the road and get to the 10th and things do change quite a bit. No more residential ping pong; the fairways seem to acquire an identity and you are playing links style golf on what has to be some of the most expensive real estate in California. It's short, it's interesting and occasionally frustrating. It's not parkland and not all links. It's fast. It's fun.

I am in the minority on here. I think the front 9 is a dog track. The back 9 is better but if there was not a big water hazard with great views the course and conditioning are not special. Go play the Bayonet and Blackhorse courses, true test of golf. There is a reason a ton of tournaments are played on those tracks and for the money is the best value in the area by far.

The point is that the majority of the holes on the back nine are the best "links" golf you can play in california, with the million dollar views to boot.


I played it a couple years ago in the winter time and it was great. It was cold and windy, which is what I would expect for a links course. For the price you can't beat it.
