Whistler Golf

I'm thinking of heading up to Whistler next month for a week with my wife. I think we'll fly into Seattle and drive up. We'll probably rent a condo. Any suggestions for deals on golf?

I'd like to play 3 or 4 rounds while we're there and was hoping that there'd be a way to improve on the $175 rate that the courses are all charging. There seem to be several websites that put together packages but I don't know if any of them are reputable.

Are there any other locations we should be considering instead? Jasper? Victoria? We've never been to the area and thought it sounded nice to escape from the Texas heat and go up to the mountains for a week.

Summer is actually the slower season at Whistler so there might be some decent stay and play options (fwiw, the Four Seasons is the only true 5 diamond property in Canada and is awesome). You have Big Sky, Nicklaus North, Château Whistler and Whistler GC, in that order, imho.

Jasper is an incredibly relaxing, beautiful destination but you only have the one option for golf (but it is an amazing track....rated number 4 in Canada). Banff has more golf options (ie. Banff Springs...# 5, Stewart Creek...#32, Kananaskis...#30 & #47, plus Silverton and Canmore GC). Much busier and more tourists than Jasper in the summer however.

Victoria is another beautiful spot and would likely be considerably cheaper than the other options. The 36 at Bear Mountain are very good. You also have Olympic View, Cordova Bay, Uplands, Royal Colwood, etc.

There's no poor choice with the destinations you are looking at. We did the opposite 2 summers ago and came down to suffer in the heat at Las Colinas...lol. ;)

You probably wouldn't want to drive from Seattle to Jasper - a flight into Calgary would be a better option if you decide on Jasper or Banff. American Airlines flies direct from DFW into YVR which would save you 3 hours of driving as opposed to flying into SEA.

Big Sky golf course near Whistler would have the best rates for golf in the area - maybe you can get some discounted twilight golf rates - it stays light out until 9:15pm easily. People do rave about Chateau golf course in Whistler but I have never played it. Avoid Furry Creek golf course south of Whistler if you come across it !!!!

If you have time Victoria would be a nice add on to the trip - take the ferry from Horseshoe Bay - very scenic !!!!! I don't think most people would spend 7 days in total in Whistler unless you are an outdoor enthusiast. Although if you got a good deal on a weeklong condo rental then I can understand and it goes without saying that Whistler can be a very relaxing holiday once there.

Probably worthwhile to stop in Vancouver for 1 night - maybe on the drive up ? Check out Stanley Park - maybe watch the cruise ships set sail from the waterfront or check out the nightlife.

OP: If you want to mix urban and outdoors Vancouver/Whistler is a great choice. Unless you want to see Seattle and play Chambers Bay, fly direct to Vancouver, there is no point in wasting all that time driving up I5.

If you just want the outdoors and to really go somewhere different, go to the Canadian Rockies. A bunch of airlines do DFW - YYC (Calgary) direct.
The entire stretch from south of Banff to north of Jasper is spectacular. There are lots of cool places to stay that are great for couples, with nice chalets/cabins and good dining options. You could play an early morning or twilight round and still have the better part of the day to do things together. The trails you can hike and sights you can see are only limited by hours in the day :)

We were there in 2012 and 2007 and had a great time. It's a place you would be hard pressed to grow tired of. I haven't actually golfed there as it's been a trip for the two of us and spending time with the missus is one of the selling points, but there are definitely enough good courses around to play 3 or 4 rounds.

My wife's family is in B.C., and we like to fly in to Calgary, then spend the night in Canmore, and drive to Jasper the next day.
I highly recommend the Falcon Crest Lodge in Canmore, and the Patricia Lake bungalows in Jasper.
The course at Jasper Park Lodge is very good, but as mentioned, it's the only one around.

Another option might be Kelowna? Several good courses in the area, and it's a short 1 hour flight from Seattle.

We booked 8 players thru BC Golf Safaris (or something like that) last year. Worked out well, no issues. AFAIK, pretty much paid rack rates on both golf & accommodations. Basically they offer the convenience of 1-stop shopping, which was worth it to us, as we had no clue about options in the BC area. I think we saved a couple $ here & there by agreeing to twilight times. They allowed everyone to pay separately (convenient), very professional (nice, clear price breakdowns) & knowledgeable about the golf courses. No, I don't work the company. :)

We played Nicklaus North, Chateau, Big Sky & Whistler GC (is how I ranked them). We booked Furry Creek ourselves as something to play on the way back to Vancouver airport. General group consensus, was just 'meh'. Am glad to play it, really just to say I played the course from Happy Gilmore, but not sure I'd do it again.
