I'm playing out there in a couple of weeks so I'm curious to hear how things are looking after the greens were punched. With the amount of rain we've had in this area I'm hoping they came back pretty quickly.

Palmetto Dunes courses are really nice as JD said...they're probably in the same price range as Heron Point/Ocean Course at Sea Pines. Hilton Head National (off the island) is a nice course as well and always in great shape.

Hoping to play Heron Point tomorrow but they gave me the typical aerification warning on the phone so I'm just curious if anyone has played either of the 3 courses recently.

Or should I play a different course in the area
I'm completely unfamiliar with the area

I was there last week. I would not advise playing it. They did aerate the greens at Heron Point most recently but they did something "extra" to them (words of the pro shop staff) and even they didn't advise playing it.

We played ocean course because they had aerated a few weeks earlier then heron and even they weren't grown in yet.

It is what it is, when you go down there this time of year you just have to deal with it. Sandy and inconsistent.

I would avoid Heron Point there are many nicer courses.

We've played pretty much everything else we can get on...figured we'd try Heron and Ocean this year to play something different. Hopefully conditions on those two will improve over the next two weeks.

We're staying in a house in Palmetto Dunes...been staying in there for the last 15 years or so.

Palmetto Dunes...check out the Jones or Hills course if you can get on either. Haven't played them in a while but I've enjoyed both in the past.

Wow, that's a heckuva drive! I'm trying to make my way out to San Diego if I can get the whole job thing to work out nicely. Enjoy your trip out here!

If you do switch to Palmetto Dunes I'm interested to hear what shape those are in. If they're good I'm going to switch my rounds when I'm down there.

I ended up playin the the RTJ course at Palmetto and I can't say I was impressed at all.
Nothing negative to say but nothing spectacular to speak of either.
The most exciting part of the day was the strong winds on the back 9.
A few good ocean views but I saw enough of that in SoCal
Greens were still in the late stages of aeration healing but rolled ok I guess
Pretty straightforward easy course, a few tricky dog legs and some water holes but that's it.
Maybe I'm just a spoiled SoCal golfer or maybe I just chose the wrong Carolina course to play my first round at.
Oh ya I hate the weather too....lol.... and the different types of grass will take some getting used to.
I have some pics but no way to upload right now

I wish I had done a little more research
I would loved to have played Arnies course (Crescent Pointe) but didn't even think to look as I thought SeaPines and Palmetto were the big dog courses in the area

Whether you believe me or not (since I was one who recommended Palmetto Dunes :)) you're better off not having played Crescent Pointe unless things have changed recently. It used to be a GREAT track but conditions have gone way down in the last few years. I don't know if the course changed owners at some point but it was never in good enough shape for us to drive that far off the island.

Hope the rest of your time in SC is great!

See, I'm kind of fond of the RTJ course. The second picture above is the 8th hole, scene of my only hole in one ever. It was a long time ago.

The Hills course at PD also had a "little bit more done" this year and the greens are a mess. Sadly they have been in pretty bad shape for a few years but it's right down the street from our place so I play there anyway. If you are looking for a challenge, give the Cupp course at PH a shot. Not sure about conditioning as they have a new mgmt company (with a spotty record imo) but it's a pretty great layout. Off Island still like HH National and Oldfield allows some outside play for a decent price.

  • 3 weeks later...

I just got back from Hilton Head and played the RTJ and Arthur Hills at Palmetto Dunes. I had played both before but it has been a while.

The RTJ course was in fantastic shape and the greens were pretty darn good. We've had a ton of rain down here so I'm sure that helped the greens come back after being punched. I didn't remember much about the course but I'll say the front 9 is much more enjoyable than the back. The first few holes on the back are nice but 13-18 aren't very memorable. The front plays tough, especially into the wind. I don't think the course is worth the full rack rate but it was still a fun round.

The Arthur Hills course, as others have said, did some extra work on the greens. They were still pretty sandy but at least they were all consistent. I can't say I'm too fond of that course because it has some really funky holes that are more target style. It has some nice ones, but again, I don't think it's worth the full rate. I think with another week of similar weather and rain that the greens will be in much better shape.

I would have said Hilton Head National if I had seen this thread in time!

But... I didn't. Yeah, summer isn't the time to be in Hilton Head.

I'll be there in Oct. Everything should be REALLY nice by then. :)

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
