Both courses are nice but Portsmouth CC is better IMO..... More of an open, long course with some good holes that are very challenging especially when its windy. If price isnt an issue then definately play Portsmouth. Breakfast hill is a short course but has a few really tough holes as well...... Either way you wont be dissapointe but do yourself a favor and try to get on Portsmouth CC, its a must play in the area!

Heading up to Portsmouth area in a couple weeks and I'm looking for a recommendation on where to play. Portsmouth CC and Breakfast Hill are both ranked in the Top 5 you can play in NH. Any thoughts on either or a preference either way? Or am I missing something even better. Thanks for any advice.

I like BH - it's my old home course and one I still play several times a year (I'm playing it Sunday) - it's a solid course. But conditioning has deteriorated a bit in the past several years. It used to be a gem. Now I'd call it "merely" solid (I found a gem I like better, but it's a 30-minute drive from Portsmouth) and I don't think it merits being on any best-of-state list anymore. Portsmouth definitely does; it's a Robert Trent Jones links-style course set on a beautiful piece of land along the Great Bay. The greens are probably the best around - so pure.

There is one other really good choice. It's in ME, but it's only probably 20 minutes from Portsmouth CC - The Ledges in York ME. My favorite track in the area - I actually like it better than Portsmouth. I'd recommend you start with the Ledges, then use Portsmouth as your Plan B.

Have fun on your trip - Portsmouth is a great town. Make sure you have breakfast one day at The Friendly Toast. Don't forget to get up to coastal ME.

Breakfast Hill is a good course and has good deals all the time during the middle week. Good course for the price. Also consider the Ledges in York, ME which is just a few more miles north of that area.

I will have to look into the Ledges. Thank you.

Second recommendation for the Ledges. I will have to look into it. Why do you like The Ledges better?

Portsmouth is becoming one of my new favorite spots to visit. Last time we hit up Colby's for breakfast and that was good. We'll try the Friendly Toast this time.

In truth, you can't go wrong with either. They're both GREAT tracks and always in great shape. I find PCC to be a bit more vanilla than the Ledges. The Ledges' greens have more contour, it has more elevation change. Both have memorable holes, but (imo) The Ledges' memorable holes are pretty special (like the par-3 8th). PCC has some amazing views on the Great Bay, though. PCC is also probably more forgiving. Both courses have the length to challenge even the longest hitters.

I think The Oaks came out the best from the winter we had. The greens have been a real pleasure to putt on.

Good to know. I'll try to play there next week. Much nicer course than it's sister, Candia Woods.

I'm at a league at Passaconaway and it's greens got hit hard.

Except for the #2 green at The Oaks. The #2 green is in worse shape than the greens that are closed at my club. It'll come back though. No other complaints. My club - Cochecho - is rumored to have all the greens open by Memorial Day.

Breakfast Hill is playing 9 holes right now, with 9 holes closed to play. I heard that they will have 18 open on the 28th or 29th this month.

#2 is indeed bad, but the improvement from May 11th to May 18th was striking, so I'm sure it will be in good form soon enough. I found the rest of the greens this past weekend to be really good, and am looking forward to this weekend when they should be in pretty much perfect shape (except number 2, which will be a question mark).

Breakfast Hill is opening the full 18 I believe on Friday, although I think (don't know for certain) that there will still be some temporary greens. There are a lot of BH guys still playing up at The Oaks until conditions improve at BH.
