Cost of Monday Qualifying...

How much to try to get into a tournament???
Hello everyone,

I just checked the Hooters Tour website. Looks like the cost for a non-member to monday qualify is $200 to enter the qualifier, and an additional $1,000 if you make it through. So, a total of $1,200 bucks to play in a tournament. That just seems crazy. I mean, that's like a top 30 finish just to break even, right??

For Nationwide Tour events, PGATour.com says the cost is $350 dollars to enter the qualifier. However, there isn't any mention of additional cost.

I was just wondering if anyone knows how much it is to qualify for Nationwide and PGA Tour events. Basically, how much is it to enter the qualifier, then how much more would you have to pay if you make it into the tournament?

$350 Nationwide

$400 PGA (200 pre-qualifier/200 qualifier)

After that there are no additional costs.

The qualifier takes the top 50 and ties. After that they take 4 for the tournament. Some only take 2 or 3 (84 Lumber takes 2).

Nationwide takes 14 spots. Better odds except that they normally have 2 fields to accommodate the number of applicants. So now you are looking at 7 at each site for the tournament.

The above post is absolutely 100% accurate!

Pay the entry fee for the Pre-Q or the Monday-Q (depending upon what tour) and there are no additional expenses other than food and lodging.

Granted, you will see most of the players who are on the Hooter's or Gateway tours playing in the Monday Q!!! However, there are no more additional costs required by the tour once...... actually... IF....... you qualify!!!

That is correct. And be prepared to go low. Last year it usually took 68 or better to Monday Q on the Nationwide Tour. I went that route for events I couldn't get into. Harsh. I shot 66 once and didn't get in. The top 7 at my site: 62,63, and 5 at 65.

Thanks for all the replies!

I was really more curious than anything. I do want to try to play professionaly and I know I can with some more hard work and better concentration. I'm not good enough right now, but I'm getting better every day.

I just thought it was pretty crazy that it cost 1,200 bucks to play in a Hooters Tour event. I guess they don't have the big sponspers to front the prize money though.

It seems to me that any player who is good enough to take a shot at the pros shouldn't even mess with the Hooters Tour...just go straight to trying to qualify on the Nationwide.

While you might be able to jump from another mini-tour to the Nationwide, I think it would be extremely difficult to go from amateur events to qualifying for a Nationwide event, much less playing on that tour regularly. I don't keep up on the smaller tours anymore, but getting some experience in one of those would definitely help you get where you want to go.

Good luck!

This same debate is going on at the club I work at. We have about 7 guys that are hooters, tar heel, and golden bear tour guys. We also have one PGA guy. I was talking to the mini tour guys and they basically said that even though most of them have exemptions on the hooters tour, it makes a lot more sense to try and qualify for the nationwide events. Its almost cheaper to try and qualify than to make the cut on the hooters tour. I wanted to try and qualify for the hooters tournament here in auburn but it is ridiculous how much it would cost for an am. like me to play for fun.

I agree with you in principle. But the truth is that it is good to have a Tour to play on regularly when you aren't able to get into a Nationwide event. The hard thing about just trying the Monday Q's without a steady place to play is you never get into a routine and you miss a lot of tournament experience. It is hard to learn to travel and manage your time and all of the other things that go along with being a Tour professional. When I was playing the Hooters, most guys would try to Monday Q and if they did not make it they would play their scheduled Hooters event. It is expensive but it is good experience. And I think the cost keeps the field size realistic. Guys will really think about their skill level before dropping the $$$ to try and play out there.

Did you play at Oak Ridge?? You might have played with me. Both guys in my group shot 66 and didn't qualify.

Really that seems really low. I thought I remember seeing a couple of the qualifiers last year where like 71-72 got in a playoff for the last couple of spots.

There were a few that had scores that high, but that was usually a result of bad weather. Occasionally you could get in with a 69 or 70. It depends on the weather, the course, and the field. The toughest weeks were when PGA guys would play down to the Nationwide because they couldn't get into the PGA event. That caused more Nationwide guys to have to Monday Qualify to get into the field. Those were tough. But I don't remember playing in one where even par got in. May have happened though. I would suggest anyone wanting to MQ for an event to go the PGA section website where that event is played and check the score from the previous year. It will at least give you an idea of what to expect.
