Hogan Bounce Sole 1+.

I was curious as to whether the Hogan Bounce Sole 1+ irons from around 1969/1970 had a shiny or frosted back? Everything I have seen says shiny but I am not sure.

They are a frosted back. Here is a picture of a set I rescued from a thrift store this weekend which I intend to restore. This is before the cleanup obviously, they shined up relatively easy.

I also am planning on refinishing my Apex persimmon woods and was concerned, as always, about the red insert material and whether they will tolerate stripping. These are the woods with a swept back sole plate with Ben Hogan in script underlined in red plus the word APEX. They also have Ben Hogan stamped on the crown. Supposedly Louisville Golf crafted these for Hogan but I can't get a reply on that from them. Any refinish advice would be appreciated.

Hey everyone, I have a set of 1970 plus 1's with the ribbon under logo left handed set... The are my first set I got when I was 6 so they hold a sentimental value because my grandpa gave them to me. I'd like to get them restored asap so I can play around with my grandfather soon after this shutdown goes by. Does anybody have any advice on getting rust off the club head, hosel diameter, and shaft recommendations. I am playing Mizuno forged 919 irons right now with KBS tour 90 stiff shaft. Any advice or help would be greatly greatly appreciated and also if anybody has a left-handed 2 Iron that would be awesome because I need that to complete the set. Thank you everyone

Vinegar should remove the rust without harming the club.

If you got the clubs when you were six, I assume they were cut down for you, hence the need to reshaft? Hogans are usually pinned, so that makes removing them a little harder, but you'll be able to find lots of information and different methods on this part of the site for that.

As for shafts, what I recommend is that after removing the shaft from, say, the 7 iron, you shaft it up with a KBS tour 90 stiff that you use now and see how you like it. Better to test first using one club rather than reshafting up a whole set then deciding you don't like the shaft.

All of the Hogan irons I've reshafted from that era were .355" taper tip.

All Hogans from any era (except the Callaway years at the end) were .355 taper tip.
