Head-shaking - your strangest experience on course?

Many years ago while on vacation in Florida, my wife and I were paired with another couple.

The ladies tee was quite a bit in front of the white tee, but the man in the other couple called "ladies first" so off they went.

My wife is a very good player, and based on her first tee shot his wife was too as both girls hit good drives.

I offered the fellow honors and he took them.

This hole was a par 5 with condos and OB right, but plenty of room to the left.

He teed up, took a mighty swing and popped one off the toe onto someone's roof.

The second effort was a virtual replay of the first.

Well we've all done that or something like it, but I've never seen before or since what happened next.

He said to me (and this is a verbatim quote because I never forgot it), "my wife intimidated me. I don't have it today," and they jumped in the cart and left, leaving me, my wife, the starter, and everyone else around the tee with our jaws on the ground.

I've experienced a lot of strange things on the course over 40 plus years, but that still tops the list.

That is awful. I hope she divorced him that night.

I was not present for this next story but my good buddy was and one of the course owner's family members. They get to 17th tee box, short par 3 with daylight pretty much gone. Can barely see the green. Right before they hit they notice movement on the green and could make out it was two people "fooling" around. So they yell and startle the hell out of them. The two bodies get up, run to their cart and hightail it towards the clubhouse in their cart. Just as they are finishing their putt on 17 they hear sirens coming towards the course. Ambulance races past them on 17 as the road there leads straight to clubhouse. My buddy and his partners forgo the 18th hole to see what the deal is. They get up towards the clubhouse and this guy is holding another guy in his lap petting his head saying "it'll be alright" while crying. My buddy and his partner then notice the guy laying down has a compound leg fracture. Turns out it was the two guys on the green, got scared, raced away as fast as they could and ended up tipping over their cart and busted one of the guy's legs. True story.

A buddy of mine was on a golf vacation and got out on Ballybunion the same day as some American pros were tuning up up for the British Open. Payne Stewart, Mark O'Meara, and Paul Azinger were on the course behind them, so they finish up and go back out to watch. They get to the 16 th green and there's a (drunk?) Irishman sitting at the edge of the green, legs on the green surface. They call ahead to clear the green and he just sits and waves them up. O'Meara and Zinger hit up, and Stewart again asks him to clear - he just shakes his head.

Stewart's approach flies the green and nails him right on the noggin. So they get up to check him out and he says, " Mr. Stewart, I thought you were a better golfer than that, you never miss when you are on Tv." Payne is good humored about it, and says, "you look like you'll have a good bump there, can I do anything for you, autograph a glove or a hat or something." Well the guy says, "Sure a hat will be fine but I'd really like that golf bag" Paine laughs and says, I still have two holes to go, I can't give you my bag" So the Irishman says, Oh, I have no place to go, I'll wait til your done, lad."

About this time the fact that he got skulled sets in and he's getting woozy. So they offer to take him to the hospital. He says, "Oh no, if you take me to the hospital, they'll find out It work and I'll be sunk. "

"Can we call your wife?"
"Oh no, she thinks I'm at work."

So Paine says, "I guess you don't really want that golf bag, do you?"

Backstory: My course with the economy has been allowing some public play due to the lack of tee times. We have had some weird instances due to this, however what happened today was a bit weirder...

Earlier today

I am playing my second shot on our 13th hole and I see a man in a hoodie stumbling a bit walking down the 18th fairway. I paid little mind to it as it was a longer round than normal and long rounds generally lead to more drinking.

As we are hitting our second shots on the next hole, we see hoodie-man get into a cart, and the driver (we will call him Mark) of the cart was high tailing it OJ Simpson style for the other end of the course. We see the executive chef of our course running after him and the group of men playing with Mark yelling at Mark to drive back to them. At this point our Assistant Pro gets in the supe'd up, no restrictor, golf cart and starts pursuit. Eventually they get the man into the same cart as the pro and there are cops waiting for him at the clubhouse.

I came to find out that hoodie-man was at a level of intoxication that could only be described as sleep-walking. While I was finishing 13 and teeing off at 14 he walked into the kitchen and presumably attempted to get a bottle for the road. At which time he was spotted by the chef and ran out onto the course. He tried to hide by laying in the grass, but Mark and his 3 friends were there to spot him. Mark, thinking that this guy had a heart attack or was getting really sick, tried to help the man. When he got into the cart Mark thought the best idea was to help him get home, however the man told Mark to go to the other end of the course to avoid the Chef and eventually the pro, who were in hot pursuit.

I ended up playing the best final 6 holes of our course after I first spotted him, so he was like my own alcoholic version of Bagger Vance.

I was on my annual golf trip about 15-18 years ago (very few cell phones back then for you youngsters) and the husband of a young lady who worked for me had ended up coming on this trip (16 guys and he was by far the youngest). He was a nice young man, but his wife definitely wore the pants in the family. On the first round of the second day of the trip he wasn't paying attention and drove his golf cart over a tree stump. It had some very, very minor damage, but like the nice young man he was he immediately reported it to the pro shop. He gave the pro his info but said please don't leave a message or say anything to my wife, speak with me only and I will take care of the cost of any damage. Of course his mistake was letting some of the guys over hear his conversation with the pro. Almost immediately one of the guys called his house and left a message on his answering machine that the cart damage total came to $3,500 and to please call him back.

So we play the second 18 that day and grab dinner before getting back to the condos. We had not been in the condo for 2 minutes before the phone rang. His wife had probably been trying to reach him every 5 minutes for a couple hours so she was really worked up by that point. The poor kid couldn't get a single word in for about 5 minutes and we could hear her screaming at him from across the room. We were all laughing hysterically. Even when we decided to let him off the hook and I spoke to his wife it took me a good 5 minutes to calm her down and convince her one of the guys in the group made the call. She didn't think it was quite as funny as we did.

Cart damage came out to $75 and the guy who made the call to his wife paid for it for the kid to apologize. Poor kid was never allowed to come on the annual golf trip again. :) Still married though.
