Two different type of golf courses.
Salish Cliff is a resort type with lodging and a casino, and Gold Mountain is a 36 hole public golf course which hosted the U.S. Public Links.  It really depending on what kind of deal you could get and which type of golf course you prefer.
Other close by public golf courses are McCormick Woods, The Home Course ( co-hosted the U.S Amateur ), The Hawks Prairie ( 36 holes ).
For Private course you could try to book a tee at the Canterwoods http://www.golflink....urse=1232756  I know many private golf courses are open to public with limited tee time available to generate cash flow.
If you would travel another hour form the Chambers Bay, try to get on Sahalee ( a private 27 hole golf course hosted the PGA Championship )or the TPC Snoqualmie Ridge.

Too many choices in Pierce County, it depends on what kind of experience you want with what what kind of budget.

I will spend the money if the golf course is worth it. I would love to play Sahalee or Snoqualmie! No idea how I would get on. I'm not part of any Club but would definitely make the drive there to play.

Will look at Canterwood. Thank you for the suggestions. Guess it's a toss up between Salish and Gold Mountain and the type of experience I want. Keep the suggestions coming!

played both of them once in September 2012. Salish is a fine course, accessible with a power cart. The Olympic course at Gold Mountain is equally good; I walked it.

My preference would be Gold Mountain.

(There is also the Home course in Dupont, about 20 minutes south of Chambers Bay. I liked that layout as well. McCormick Woods is fine. Trophy Lake is good, as is the Resort at Port Ludlow. I played the north/south nines at Sahalee many years ago; it's a good course, but in my view overrated. Also played Aldarra last year, which is very good course. Still, I would pick Gold Mountain (Olympic) over any of those courses.)

If you want a real challenge, there is White Horse in Kingston, about 70 minutes north of Chambers Bay. It is a very difficult course, perhaps unfairly so. I walked it and enjoyed the course, despite its toughness.

Wow. I know they're are a lot of good reviews with Gold Mountain. You liked it more than Sahalee?? If for nothing else, would love to play Sahalee just to say i played it. I'm assuming i can't just call and ask them if i can play it. Might have to flip a club on which one to play if I can't get on.

Like mentioned above....Salish is very resort feeling which most courses up are not..... It is a coin toss fore sure.

Everyone has their preference on what suits their eye. If Salish was closer to me then and not priced to much more then GM, I would play Salish over GM

Why not play both since it will be Summer time?

TPC is nice as you might have seen on TV and might be able to arrange a 4some with a few other WRX members that are also members in here and Sahalee is great.....I hit balls with a guy from there and have yet to be invited....tough place to get on.

I don't mind playing with a few WRX members if they don't mind a 15HC hack playing with them at Snoqualmie. :D

I would play more courses but I am going to Bandon Dunes and will also play Pebble and Pasatiempo so the schedule is packed. If only I could take off more. :)

If any WRX members want to play, I'm Game!

If I had the opportunity to only play one of them, hands down Salish Cliffs. Like others have said it is a resort type course but it is in pristine condition all the time. The grass range feels like your hitting off of a tightly mown fairway. The fairways thump when you take a divot really there is nothing like a brand new course. The layout is challenging and tough. The elevation changes provide some amazing views and their pace of play is marshalled a lot more than Gold Mtn. Cart and Range service is included in the price.

Gold Mountain would be my course to play on a regular basis. It's consistenly good and the greens are top notch as far as speed and consistency goes. The only course worth playin is Olympic, Cascade is great but Olympic is a far superior course. It's a great tough track from the tips. The conditions can be hit or miss depending on the season, the prices are a steal for the caliber of course.

Very good courses that play similar tree lined NW golf. If I could only play one it is Salish based on the rare factor. It's brand new and a top 100 rated public course.

The other key factor is the punching of greens.....I would be on top of both places in advance before you commit about the greens. Two different types of greens also....Salish can be really really nice as I am pretty sure they are bent grass were I am pretty sure the Poa has taken over at GM

I know the course that I play punching is scheduled the last Monday in August.

Salish does look really good and I guess you can never go wrong staying in a Casino. Still have a while to go before I have to decide.

Thats what I was worried about but hopefully will avoid that if I go beginning to middle of August. Might even push it to July if I have to. Will probably call when I decide and see if they already have the schedule for maintenance for aeration/punching. Thanks for the heads up, good to check on that before the trip.

You should be fine at either course in the August, as it is prime tournament season.

I hope so! I am still going to bring rain gear just in case for the weather and I hope that the golf courses are pristine...

I rarely play in Pristine courses in Washington State....best last year was Wing Point

I hope you zero expectations for CB greens!
[/quote]

As long as the greens roll pretty good, I will have no problems. I'm just going to take in the beauty of the course. :D

Forgot to bring up that i now have an extra day to play! I would like to play a course that's more scenic. I'm willing to drive. Was thinking druids Glen or desert canyon.

I should change the title of this thread. :P

Desert Canyon.. in Orondo? Nice place, but not a destination.

If you're willing to drive, I'd bag all of them except for Chambers and play Suncadia in Cle Elum. Some of the privates that were mentioned are always in great shape and very nice, but not at all scenic and kind of overrated (Sahalee and TPC Sno). The most scenic clubs aren't typically the best anyway (see: Sandpoint).

Or play somewhere in Oregon.

I agree with this post. I have played both and they both offer the Pacific Northwest style of tree lined fairways. If I had to choose one over the other, Salish for sure. By playing CB and and Salish Cliffs will provide two different experiences and what I think is the best of what Western Washington has to offer.
If you don't mind an hour or so drive out of seattle/tacoma, I would look at the Suncadia offerings. PNW golf at it's best.

Scenic: BearMountain Ranch in Chelan, Desert Canyon in Orondo. I hear that Gamble Sands will be opening early this summer. a new David McLay Kidd project that is supposed to be stunning. If I were you, I would ditch CB all together and check out these three since they will all be in the same region. You will get plenty of Links style golf when you go to Bandon.

I can't ditch CB. My friends wouldn't let that down if I didn't play a US Open site once.

Gamble Sands looks Amazing! Considering it's opening in 6 months, will see what the reviews are.

Might go Salish Cliffs, CB, Gamble Sands. My body feels sore already.

Agree for an out of towner you cannot skip on Chamber's regardless of the green conditions 8 months from now. The opportunity to play a US Open course is a rare one, and to be on a public track that has stunning views makes it even more of a no brainer. Too bad your trip wasn't for 2015, my reg's def plan on playing CB as soon as they re-open after the Open.

Chambers Bay is a must! My first time playing there will be in April, and I am pretty stoked on that. As for the second course, I would have to agree with Suncadia. The Prospector course would be my choice if you can only play one. You can easily make it a 36 hole day if you want to throw in Rope Rider too.

Salish Cliffs is by far one of the best facilities in the state in my opinion. Played it last August, and the greens were the nicest I've been on in the state.

Added plus if your headed to Salish Cliff.....you can go Razor Clamming and Golf SC on the same day!

To each their own.

I'd pick Gold Mountain - Olympic all day every day if I had to choose. Just too much of the intangibles at GM that tip the scales imo. Great membership. Ultra casual. Old school design. Drains better. Etc.

Thankfully, I can't imagine not playing them both when I'm out that way (which is typically about 3 times per year). Considering I can play both for less than what it costs for one round at CB, I'm in.
