Cleveland Iron Comparison: Cleveland CG16 Tour vs Cleveland 588 CB

Hi all,

I am debating switiching my current irons, Cleveland CG16 Tour, out for the Cleveland 588 CB's. I personally love the CG16 Tours, flight is high but strong and the head is compact and fits the eye. however, I love the look of the 588 CB's and have heard some really good things, having played the Wilson FG Tour's before my current set, I figure the 588 CB's to be similar. I am not real particular on the feel of forged as some are, though I must say forged doe feel nice, I am strickly looking for a great performing set. I am wondering if anyone can compare the performance of the Cleveland CG16 Tour's to the 588 CB's. Anything on flight, distance.....any input on the standard -1/4" length, and the 1.0degree difference loft weaker in the shorter irons of the 588 CB set compared to the CG16 Tour?

I have not played the retail cg16 tours but I did have the T stamps and ran them against some cg7 c's last year or so. Cg16's won but I dropped both for the 588cb. The cg16 t's had a nice weight and profile and got the ball up in the air quickly with nice distance. If you are a super strong swinger you may have issues spinning them too much as some have complained about but I never did. Plus I don't mind swing able to stop long irons on greens. They were great all around except I didn't like the pw for short game shots and they had a clacky feel/sound.

The 588cb on the other hand felt and sounded great. One of the most solid irons I've ever used. Not mushy Mizuno soft but solid soft. I didn't think the gave up any distance to the cg16 personally and the pw was great in the short game. I did spin these in the wind a few times but that was with kbs shafts if that makes a difference really. Could still stick a green with the long irons. The soles are noticeably thinner which eventually lead to there demise. I started getting to steep and decided the thin sole was no good for me and then caught a rock with the leading edge of the 7iron and it bothered me so I stupidly got rid of them.

If you can game the FG tours you can game the 588cb. I think a paintless 588cb is one of the prettiest clubs on the market and one of the best performing with sneaky forgiveness. Other than having a thinner sole I thought it was just as forgiving as the cg16 but mjnd you again, it was the t stamp version.

If I had to choose I'd take the 588cb again and if I could do it all over I'd have stayed with the cg7 c stamps. Fwiw, I just picked up some cg16 p stamps and after 9 holes and 1 range session they maybe the elusive combo of looks, feel, forgiveness, and sole width I've been looking for but only time will tell.

And honestly, I only got them to quiet the ho in me until I can pick up some z545/745's in the fall when they start getting dumped on the bst.

Thank you this was very helpful, I think I am in the same boat as you. I heard numerous reviews that the CG16 Tour went too high, but it really is a nice high flight not real spinny for me either. I will continue to evaluate my options going forward. Thanks again!

well.. I WAS going to reply but Kess was pretty much on point with his description. For their size, the 588cbs are incredibly forgiving. Look through my WITB link. That satin finish I put on.. ya I regret selling them. However, my garage 6i is a 588cb.

I find I get a lot of spin and height with my CG16 Tours, and that is with the DG-S300 shaft. The feel on centered shots (as you probably know) is very forged like. When I hit the CG16 Tours against some really great forged clubs (MP64, Srixon Z-TX2, Bridgestone J40, etc), I was shocked at how good they felt.

It would really depend on what "fit's your eye", to determine if you were going to notice any difference by going to the 588CB. They look great in the bag, that's for sure. There may be a touch less offset on the CB's, which might be a good thing for you. They will be more workable, and are also going to be easier to flight down, because there is less meat on the sole.

For most people, the advantage would go to the CG16 Tour on the longer irons, and it would be a wash, or slight edge to the 588CB, as you get into the scoring irons .... again, depending on what you are looking for.

Woods/Fairways:  Callaway with Mitsubishi shafts

Irons:  Srixon with Dynamic Gold shafts
