Shaft options for my UDI

I’ve played a Bridgestone airmuscle for 2 years with an xcaliber tour fwy shaft (TX flex) I ordered my udi 2 iron with The hzrds Black in 6.5 and immediately hated the shaft. Cut it down to 39.5” added 4 grams of lead tape and still hated it. I’m a 115ss guy with the driver but that shaft just feels dead to me. I’m leaning towards a heavier graphite shaft that’s a little more lively. With the hzrds it was low bullets, looking for a shaft with a little more active tip so I can elevate it when I want to. I have ideas of 93g blueboard or the Tensei blue hybrid but wanted some input from others.

Just for reference this was me trying to hit a nice little high fade, which with my old 2 iron would be about 30 feet higher and peeling right. With this Shaft it feels like everything just wants to go low and slightly left. I am getting it bent to my spec which is 2* flat.

Does the Tensei Pro Blue 90 come in stiff flex?

No the 90 only comes in TX. The 80 comes in S though.

I currently have the Pro White 90stiff in my TMB; What would be different with the Pro Blue 90tx? Would it still spin more, still be higher flight?

It's an oldie but goodie - PX HB6. It says it's a stiff tipped shaft but hits more of a mid flight. I have one in a Tour Burner 2i and get an amazing mid piercing flight. In my UDI 4, it's absolutely perfect for holding greens from distance. Plus, they come in .355T (if you can find one) or if you want .370, the bay has them for about $10. Oh, and it feels much better than HZRDUS even though I really like the HZRDUS Black feel.

In my personally experience and opinion, shaft is all about profile (feel) and how it effects your timing. One shaft by nature with a robot may produce lower spin, but with humans I feel it's totally different.

The white profile is a little stiffer in the tip, much stiffer in the middle and much less stiff in the butt than tensei blue. The pro version just means the tip is more stiff than the non-pro. If you like the feel of mid kick shafts, you will probably like how the blue feels more than the white. I never try to chase spin/launch via a shaft. I chase feels and swing rhythm, and then match the loft/head for the flight/spin I need.

This is the drive EI profile table, but I'd imagine the hybrid profiles are similar:

A not so glamorous answer, but when I had a 2i UDI I thought the stock CT taper lite (stiff) was perfect for this iron. Light enough to get some club head speed going, and a perfect launch/trajectory.

I normally play X's in all my clubs, but the stock shaft, for me, was perfectly matched to the head.

I am definitely in the same school of thought as you and am looking in the area of Tensei blue. Thanks

I also thought this. Was really shocked how much it still kept the ball down but can still elevate when needed. I sit in that 115-118 range with the driver for reference.

You might check out UST Recoil 110 or the 125's. I put a 110 f5 in my UDI and liking it.

I thought about the recoils. If this one doesn’t work it I’ll probably head in that direction

Is anyone playing the 790 UDI 2i with the DG x100? If so, did you go any shorter than standard?

I am and I have no issues with distance. Played in a captains choice tourney a few weeks ago and had a 298 yd par 4 that had a slight dogleg left and I hit a small draw and ran it up on the green. The club is solid and plenty long.

  • 1 year later...

Just bought a Fli Hi 3i with DG 105 X100 shaft...I was skeptical as I am usually a DGS300 player even in these utility/driving irons and wasn't sure how the lighter weight would work for me but I am blown away. Compared side by side and clubhead speed is up, launch is a tad higher but not ballooning at all and doesn't feel "whippy" at all as I have found with other lighter weight shafts. I need to get some more miles on it before making a definitive statement but I think this may be my long iron shaft moving forward.
