Changing up the woods in my bag.

Recommended Posts

I've been carrying a 3w, 5w, and 3h in my bag and thinking about eliminating the 5w and 3h and replace them with a 7w or 7 heavenwood.

At one point, I also carried a 4h but the choice between the 4h and 3h just sort of blurred and I felt that I could get along with the just the 3h and reduce the intensity of my swing if I did need the full distance with it.

Reasons for doing this are that I only use the 5w in some very selective situations which don't really occur that often. I do use my 3h whenever I feel like my 5i won't quite get there. Seems like I might be able to get along with a 7w. Any thoughts on this?

Well, sine you already have a 4h, why not go 5w, 4h? Your 5w and 3h are probably only a couple of degrees apart... (19 and 21 likely)

I really need the 3w in the bag because on par 5's and longer par 4's it's always my 2nd shot. The 5w only gets used in those situations where I might mishit the 3w and suddenly it's in 5w range. As I said, now that my skill level has improved, that doesn't happen very often.

I'm really trying to eliminate 2 of my woods between the 3w, 5w, and 3h and replace one of them with one that can take the place of those 2. My 5w is 19 degrees and the 3h is 19, and moving to a 7w that is 21 degrees or a 7 heavenward that is 20 degrees might do the trick.

How about a 7W head with a 5W shaft? The distance gap between that and a 5W will be fairly small, and choking up an inch will very likely give you 3h distance.

With the new lofts and launch characteristics of modern clubs I found myself going from 3W, 3H, 4H to 3W, 2H, 4H and finally now I play 3W, 7W, 4H.

I've tried all the combos.

I go:

3w

7w

23° hybrid

5 iron (25° fli hi mp18)

6i.......

My long game is optimized with this set up. I can use 7w and below for all carry, going at the target, type of shots. Above 7w, I only use 3 wood if off the tee, or if there is not alot of trouble at 200+ yards. Otherwise, the 3wood risk/reward usually doesn't pay off if it is a small target with trouble near.

Hit em good

I too have tried many combo's.

I started with 5wd and 4H (18 deg and 22 deg), then went to 4+ wd and 4H (16 deg and 22 deg), then I found a matching 7wd to my 4+ wd (21 deg) and carried 4+, 7wd and the 4H sometimes. I really like the 4+ wd and the 7 wd combo as both are the Steelhead XR's and so easy to hit!

Now since I have been playing alot of new to me courses that are longer 6300-6500 yards and I am not a long ball hitter, I went to a strong 3wd and 5wd (14 deg and 18 deg) and I sometimes add the 4H too. Some course's have a tee shot of 200-210, then a 220-230 ish second!

So basically I have a few different setups now and my bag setup depends on where I am playing!

I don't think you can go wrong with the 7wd as it is a great club! I never hit one til I found the matching one for cheap that was like new and I was very impressed and kinda shocked on how easy to hit it is and how long it actually is. I thought it would just launch too high but it didn't.

That's pretty close to what the heavenwood is, just 4W shaft instead.

For the OP: I recently switched up to the following:

D: 250-270

4W: 230-250

Heavenwood (at 22 deg): 190-230. Super easy to just choke down on it for the shorter distances, but gets out there if I step on it.

5i 180-190

Heavenwood replaced a 4H I had been using. Much easier to hit and lands far softer which is what I was looking for.

Wouldn't recommend it if you play on windy courses though. That thing goes high.
