Mizuno 919 Forged vs. Hot Metal

In the market for a replacement for my JPX 825 irons. Had then stolen last year so I ventured down the Ping i200 road and just never warmed up to the Pings.

My old JPX 825s were fitted with DG S300 shafts. They were pretty much my irons through my 30's while my son was young. Now I am 41 and have gone from playing once a week to maybe once a month if lucky due to work and family events.

My game has changed over the years. My distance has slipped with the driver and irons for sure. I am happy with a 245 yard drive but at times can pepper them out 265+. Old days I could touch the 300 yard line. My seven iron use to be an easy 165 yard club all day with my 8 iron easily a 150. Now my seven is more like a 155 yard club.

Because of the distance changes they moved me from the DG s300 to the KBS Tour 120 Stiff in my Pings. The shaft was ok but I feel like my shots flew higher which is bad for me being a high ball hitter naturally.

So now I approach a fitting with PGA Superstore in the next few weeks. I am on the fence as to which iron to pick. I hit for about an hour today at the store and the 919 forged 7-iron SS is around 85-89 mph. Trackman inside said my spin was around 7200-7500 spin with a carry of around 145 yards. The 919 Hot metal was similiar in spec, maybe gained a few more yards with slightly lower spin.

I just don't know if I have the game for the 919 forged anymore and should look at the Hot Metal. even though I only play once a month I love that once a month. I was a all-state caliber baseball player when I was younger and naturally athletic so even now I can go out cold and shoot an 80 if my chipping is somewhat on.

The saleman even mentioned maybe going 4,5,6 in hot metal and 7-GW in Forged.

My main goal is hitting every green in regulation. I don't try and play a fade to a back right pin these days. I try and hit the right tier of the green and dead center. I wish I knew how the 919 Forged stacked up for my game and to my old JPX 825s.

Anyone been fitted and decided between these two irons?

The 919F would be the modern replacement for your 825F. The tech in the 919F should make them more forgiving than the 825F. The 919HM should be even more forgiving but fly higher. If your SS is actually bumping on 90 mph with 7i, the shaft they gave you is wrong. You’re giving up a lot of yards! You are borderline x flex.

That must be why I fell in love with the S300 shaft in the demo head vs. the KBS 120 S and KBS 90 R. The KBS Tour 120 S kept causing me to leak to the right of the center line which I now wonder if that was more lie angle. The S300 produced the lower spin and slight draw I have been missing.

The Nippon stock stiff was terrible for me. Very short distance, almost 10 yards a shot.

I wonder if I should look at the Project X shafts or stick with DG S300.

I would try DG 120 X100. They are supposed to launch lower and spin a bit less.

Thanks, I will give them a look when the fitting comes. I never expected to get advice on moving stiffer but I guess the trackman #s are accurate?

I was probably closer to the 85mph speed on more shots that the 89 I will say. But my tempo is quick so sometimes it does jump.

At your speed I would recommend trying Project X Rifles 6.0 non-flighted. The Rifles and the PX LZ are nothing alike and I have not cared for the LZ. It feels strange to me.

And in the KBS line, I’d take a look at C Taper 120 stiff or C Taper Light X flex.

Nippon Modus for you would be more in the range of the 125 stiff or 120 X flex.
