What's This Hammer Game (Dallas) ?

I come across a lot of golfers from all over the country, but one thing I notice particularly from Dallas golfers is that they play this game called Hammer. I keep hearing them say this during the round.

"Hammer!"

"I accept."

"I decline."

"I hammer back!"

It sounds almost as annoying as MC Hammer ("U can't touch this!"), but I did not want to ask what the heck game these guys are playing. Furthermore, this hammer game is popular only in Dallas. Golfers from Houston or San Antonio I come across don't play this game; I think the game is overwhelmingly popular in Dallas.

So what is so fun about this hammer game? What are the rules to this game?

Air hammers are the best

When someone says hammer they are doubling the bet for that hole. You can choose to release but it leaves the door open for a birdie, birdies double the amount again in our game.

So if someone hammers you and you decline, you concede the bet. If you hammer back, does that double the double (4x the original) or it is merely a triple bet (3x the original)?

You set the $ / hole / player from the start. We always play in a group of 5. The tee rotation is set on the 1st hole - whoever is teeing off first gets to pick their partner and is the team of 2. They have to pick the player after they swing...cant wait until the end.

SO.. team of 2 / team of 3.

Team of 2 hammers in the fairway.

Original bet ($4/player) doubles to ($8/player).

Each subsequent hammer will double the bet / player.

If a team bows out of a hammer - they conceded the bet. HOWEVER, the team that won can still make more money by birdie-ing the hole or better. Birdies double the bet as well.

We reset the tee order on 15 or 16 depending on who the biggest loser is at that point. They can pick the $/player/hole for the remaining holes. They also pick the teams each hole.

Its fun. Can get nasty though.

Take a trip to Golf Club of Dallas and talk to Keith the pro or Phillip the GM. They’d be glad to explain/take all your money! Such a good game, but can definitely get bloody fast! I’ve seen a putt drop on 18 which flipped $720 a player on the small team!

Wolf! Awesome game, and when the presses (or hammers) start flying, man can it get expensive.

No Laying Up has a bunch of podcasts playing Wolf Hammer and they even have a cheat sheet uploaded some where on their website.

Usually, once the hammer is thrown, it can be "dropped" in which the hole bet is conceded. "Accepted" which doubles the bet. Or "thrown back" or "boomeranged" in which the team that threw it makes the same choices for triple the original bet.
