Florida trip, advice

Recommended Posts

I am planning a trip down to Florida to hit up a tournament for a day or two, go to a nice beach, maybe play a round of golf. Would like the tournament to have Tiger in it so probably between these:

MAR 7 - 10

Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard

Bay Hill Club & Lodge, Orlando, FL

MAR 14 - 17

THE PLAYERS Championship

TPC Sawgrass, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL

MAR 21 - 24

Valspar Championship

Innisbrook Resort (Copperhead), Palm Harbor, FL

However, I doubt Tiger will be playing the valspar? I think I'm leaning towards the Players. Can you guys give advice on the best one to attend and good beaches in the area, etc? Thanks

Idk if Tiger's is going back to Valspar...I want to say he added it last minute.

Of the remaining two, I'd rather go to Sawgrass....not much help on the local beaches...I lived on the westcoast of FL.

yea he played it last year but highly doubt he will this year unless he's missing all his cuts prior. He mentioned he wanted to keep schedule lighter this year and doubt he will play all three of those tournaments back to back but he's almost guaranteed to play the first two.

How is it attending the players tournament? I've been to regular tournaments and majors and actually prefer regular tournaments because you can actually see the players hit shots and not such a crowded mess.

I might just end up just going somewhere down in florida for a few days to work on my game, play some golf and go to the beach instead, any recommendations on a plan?

The players is a great tournament, and Sawgrass is a great viewable venue. Especially on Thursday. Local courses (nonprivate) won't blow you away, and the beaches aren't the best. I would just rec going to streamsong or if for sure want beach...Hammock beach ocean and conservatory.

Honda. Good course relatively easy walk, all the big names will be there (home event for most). Beaches are good, nightlife is great. Golf is pretty good, might be more expensive during the week of the event but you can even play the other courses at PGA while the event is going on.

Players is an awesome spectator experience. Never any problem getting good views with proper planning. The beaches in Jacksonville are awesome, I don't know what the prior poster doesn't like about them. The problem will be with the date change for the Players, you will probably be a month away from predictable decent beach weather. March here can be great or pretty chilly and breezy if you hit one of the typical Nor'easter weather patterns that time of year. Or you can get lucky and have a stretch of sunny, 80 degree days. Ocean will still be chilly.

The API is better, but I'm biased.

TPC is closer to the beach though if you really want to do that.

The API was huge last year and judging by the amount of stands and etc theyre building this year, it's going to be another one for the books.

Well friend recommended I visit Anna Marie island and I noticed it was next to where valspar was taking place so I setup the trip, go to tournament one day and the rest will be beach, playing golf and whatever else. Anyone have recommendations on golf course to play, where to stay or anything?

Look for a place on St Pete Beach. I'd play either World Woods out in Brooksville, Lave Jovita in Dade City or TPC Tampa. All a bit of a drive but worth it. Hit up Frenchy's for seafood in Clearwater and have a drink at the Undertow Beach Bar on St Pete Beach.

anna marie is not next to valspar. it's like staying at tampa and going to bayhill.

but if you do decide to stay in anna marie, Lakewood National is THE club you should play.

my flight is into clearwater which is like 20 mins from valspar. Going there first day and then drive down to Anna Maria to stay for the rest of trip, believe its like 1.5 hours away at most.

If you have not played streamsong Anna Maria is about as close as you will ever get (it is in the middle of nowhere, about 1.5 hrs from where you are staying). Streamsong Red>Black>Blue IMO. Black is a blast with large undulating greens and open fairways.
