Grip strength implications for early release / lag?

Recommended Posts

Have consistent in to out path and fighting over drawing. Coach recommended weakening left grip. Certainly reduces curvature but notice there is more of an early release at the bottom of the swing. No cast at the top but half way down you can see the hinge unwind sooner. Seems like with a stronger left grip more lag is maintained without trying trying to maintain it. Has anyone else seen this correlation?

I struggle with the same fault (in to out) and I find that weakening either of the grips or opening my clubface art setup in any way causes me to draw it even more. I guess my brain knows the face is open and so it causes me to close it quickly at impact.

And I tend to cup my wrist at the top, so it causes an early release for me too. If I strengthen my grip or do a bowed wrist, I tend to hit blocks. But I don’t swing that way usually because it feels unnatural, and because I’m so deathly afraid of a right miss (lefty) that I discourage anything in my swing that might have a right miss possibility...lol. So I have a weak grip, cup my wrists, try to hold the face open through the swing, etc. Which I am sure all somehow encourages all of the wrong things for my swing ?

Edited to add that I’ve been reading a lot of the mental stuff lately, and the general consensus there is that the subconscious tends to recreate what it thinks is supposed to happen at impact, almost no matter how you set up. So in theory, if you set up “open” it will work harder to close. But a lot of golf instructors say to setup “open” if you want to fight a hook. So those would seem to be opposing thoughts. And as I try to fix my swing, I’m often stuck between a short term move that might help me now vs knowing that in the long term it will cause my brain to close the face even more. Too much to think about...I think I need a psychologist.

Shouldn't be thinking about lag at all.

What are the path numbers? If you are shutting down the face so much that you are pull hooking with a moderate path to the right that is likely from something else than just grip. What does the face look like at the top?

Big difference between “lag” (angle between shaft and left forearm in downswing) and having hands ahead of ball at impact. Can have too much of former and still flip.

The latter is most important, and, for me at least, strengthening both hands, particularly the low hand, helps to get them ahead of the ball at impact and not flip to square the face.
