Modus 3 105 S vs DG 105 R

(note: for the latest please see post #16)

Playing P790 '17' versions with DG 105 stiff.

Bad back and getting older I've lost a full club in 2 years. From suggestions on here (thank you!!!) have it down to two shafts.

Modus 3 105 STIFF and DG 105 REG. Much easier to load and got at least a 1/2 a club back with both.

The DG played very well.

Modus gave me a few more yards (2-4) and possibly a degree more launch which I can use. But was losing it right with no draw coming back to centre ( I usually play a draw)

Does this mean it's a tad too firm for me?

Thinking of soft stepping the Modus once, maybe twice.

Not being a builder or much experience with soft stepping I'd love to hear from you experts.

Thanks in advance.

I played the Modus 105 in a flex that was too soft for me, and I lost a lot of balls left. My experience playing with Nippon 105 and 125 shafts is that too stiff starts right but stays relatively straight, and too soft hooks left. But when it's dialed in it goes straight and feels amazing.

I had Modus 105 Stiff. My 7i SS is 86 mph and it was too soft for me. I'm now playing Modus 125 Stiff and love it. Once I felt the buttery smoothness of Modus shafts it's hard to like hitting DGs.

Are you testing outside or in a simulator? Modus 105 is definitely softer in flex than DG105, probably by about 1/2 a flex. If you like the Modus try hitting both the R and S to see if the R produces a draw. I prefer to hard step an R flex rather than soft stepping an S, I soft stepped Modus 105 S 1X in a set of irons and still felt too firm. One other shaft that you might find interesting is the TT Elevate, but not sure if the 95 and 105 are available in taper tip.

Only inside as its winter up here.

I will take that suggestion and try the reg in the modus 105.

Thanks!

I've played the Modus 105 R in both Ping and Mizzy irons and they have amazing feel. If I do anything related to flight, its try to baby draw. I have no issues doing that with R flex and I could probably play the S ( I have Stiff shafts in Tour AD DI-6 and 7) but the R flex seems to do the trick.

The modus 105 s is firmer in the mid section and tip of the shaft than dynamic gold 105 R. Really the profiles are much different between the modus and r flex in dynamic gold.

The dynamic gold bend profiles change with flex. The modus has the same bend profile in all three flexes, they just change in stiffness. I dont think that modus 105 soft stepped will get you any closer to dynamic gold 105 r flex. the profiles are just too different. Modus 105 has a bend profile like dynamic gold x flex, but just a bit softer.

I've played the Modus 105 in R flex and DG 105 in R. 81 mph 7 iron. Older and bad back. Modus 105 performed more smoothly and more consistent ball flight without having to exert as much effort as the DG 105. Modus flight was slightly higher, but never had a problem in the wind. Tossed both of them after trying the Oban CT 100's in R+ flex and, although kinda pricey, my body (particularly my back) greatly appreciates it.

I need a firmer tip, so I play Modus 105 stiff. OP, sounds like you should either go R in Modus, if that is the feel and performance you like, or go with DG 105. A bit softer with help with that 'right shot'. Also check your lie angles. A bit more upright might help? Without seeing ball flight and numbers, hard to say what you need?! Maybe XP95/950s(more spin/softer tips) would help?

I also need a former tip. Not that I swing hard and I could use the spin and launch... just with the softer ones my dispersion goes way up.

Haven't tried the modus in R as they only had a still in the demo cart.

Lie angles were in their demo heads.

Born and raised in Montreal. I was there watching the great teams we had in the 70s. Do you draw/hook the ball? If so, ya you need a firm tip. If not, and you need help with a fade, the softer(vs. Modus 105)tipped DG105 might be a better fit?! The Mizuno shaft optimizer is a great tool to narrow down the right shaft. Check it out! Any questions, fire away.

Sounds like we are the same age. From CSL. moved to Toronto in the early 80s. Still watch every game of the Habs.

Yes I play a draw. Low spin as well.

The DG 105 feels the same as the Modus 105 to me. The Modus gave me a few more yards and more difficult to turn over.

Please educate me on the differences.

Ya, we need to 'break up the band'!! Only a few key players, the rest, especially Drouin can go!! 55 yrs. old here.

Ya, the 2 shafts are very similar, I go with the Modus because I draw the ball. As long as you have approx. 45* angle of decent and some spin(7iron), you should have some stopping power on the greens. Another to look at with a stable tip is the KBS Tour 90. But since you like the Modus, try reg. flex. Might help square things up and give 'a bit' more height and spin.

Back feeling a bit better today so went to try the Modus reg. Demoed it in the Srix 585 and 785.

Very stable in both heads. Draws back to the middle.

no hooks. High, punch, low draws, even a few fades in the 785. Could get fades once I tried a flatter lie in the 585.

That shaft w those combo of heads are at the top of my list. Waiting for a set of 785 in the store to demo the combo. Like the irons more than the P790s currently in my bag. More compact head, much easier to work the ball. 585 just as forgiving and just as long.

golf64 I did have more height and an extra couple of yards carry.

thanks all ???????

Glad things are coming around! From what you have told me, either go full set 585 or go combo set. Still get fit for length, lie, grips.

After demoing and being fitted for the Z785/585 split set in a Modus 105 regular, I had no choice but try the 7s in the 120 stiff to decide where to make the split.

Every swing on the button. Taped up 785 p, 9, 8... so I could see clearly where it hit on the head.

The Modus 105 were good. These 120s seemed so much more “stable”.

Afraid Srixon doesn’t offer the Modus 120 in reg for some crazy reason.

Tried the 120 stiff today in a fitting 7 iron and I had to work a bit too hard.

The 105 reg and stiff was just a tad too inconsistent.

Thinking of soft stepping TWICE the 120 stiff.

This make any sense to you shatftoids?

I play a set of 17 5-AW P790’s with Modus 105s. I have a 790 4 iron shafted up with a Modus 120s. I did that after being fit by PXG into the 120 Gen3’s. I wanted to try the 120 real time and needed a 4 iron.

Several rounds in, I really like the 120. Much more consistent for me. My next set of irons will have the 120’s. BTW, my 7 iron goes 165-170 in AZ conditions.

My experience has been that if i soft step a shaft that I feel I have to work too hard, it still ends up feeling too firm after soft stepping. Certainly SS 2X will help, but be careful, a stiff which has been SS 2X will not feel like a regular in the same shaft HS 1X.

Regarding the Modus 120, virtually nobody offers it in R, only S and X.

Thanks all! I will take your advice into consideration.

This is why I have to ask you guys with more experience.

Only reason I'm even leaning towards doing a 2x ST is the shaft is so damn consistent for me.

Spin and launch were very similar to the 105s according to the fitter yesterday. But that softer tip tends to get to the ground sooner than I want.

Plus Nippon is soft to begin with so Im gathering the 120 really is really more towards "firm".

Being one to be very sensitive to the feel of shafts and how one tends to influence another...I went in today and didn’t touch the 105 at all.

Just hit a set of 785s in the 120 stiff.

So consistent. So solid. Even the odd miss hit was rarely penalized more than 5 yards or so.

Ended up ordering A-6 in the 785s in the 120 stiff soft stepped. The fitter was fine going non stepped at all.

Full, partial, low, high, draws, even fades which aren’t my forte.

Could not get over how many times I landed on the same yardage. Could predict the number as soon as I would hit them.

Certainly didn’t have that consistency in the P790s.

Only went 585 in the 5 iron.

Thanks again!!!
