Wilson Sam Snead Irons

Slunkhead

Recommended Posts

My grandpa played this old set of Wilson Sam Snead Blue Ridge irons in the late 80s/early 90s. After he passed away, I inherited all his old golf gear. I put most of it in the basement and forgot about it for a few years. While cleaning out my workshop last week, I found his old irons. I tried to google some info on them, but can't seem to find anything (years of production, where they were made, etc). Considering contacting Wilson, but before I do, I wanna see if anyone on here knows anything about these irons. Are they forged, cast? Thanks for the help in advance.

Yes you used to see them at hardware stores, along with baseball bats, gloves and balls, along with basketballs, and footballs. For all of you that remember Green Stamps; they had a set at the store you redeemed the stamps for merchandise back in the day, for 4 books of stamps. My dad wouldnt let me get them, thus the reason I remember them so well.

My dad had a set like these. He couldn't afford to play golf and his clubs set in the shead for years. I believe he purchased them from JC Penney. You have a great gift, keep care of them and the memories.

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it. I have been wondering when these were made, had no idea they were possibly from the 50s/60s. And yeah, I was pretty sure they weren't an expensive set, but their worth means nothing to me, I hold on to them for sentimental reasons. I might just regrip them and play a round with them lol.

Thanks a lot.

Lots of golfers, myself included, got their start with a set of Sam Snead Blue Ridge. Got mine for Christmas 1966, the classic beginner's set of 1 and 3 woods and 3-5-7-9-Putter. Still have 'em!

I agree with all of the posts but would add that they are most likely late 60's or early 70's models. They are forged clubs for department and sporting goods stores and were never sold in pro shops.

I see that you're looking for a 3 wood. I use a Callaway Big Bertha Steelhead III with a steel stiff shaft. It's a great club that's from 2002 or 2003 and I'm amazed at the number of tour players and better amateurs who use them when they could have anything. I bought mine used in 2003 and haven't yet found anything better.

I had a set of the Sam Snead Blue Ridge irons, I think they were re-released in the late 70's if memory serves me correctly and instead of the sand blasted strip on the muscle back the finish was all high polished chrome. I also had a matching driver and four wood in a beautiful maple type finish ( Strata Bloc ? ) They were not persimmon heads but the much cheaper laminated alternative....but to a teenager, they were nice all the same.

I still have my grandfather's Wilson's... The Irons are great, but I am affraid I was not too careful with his persimmons... water damage. When he passed I was still in my early 20's. I was willed his clubs because I was always fascinated with them as a child. Though my parents met at a country club through the memberships of their parents... I never became a golfer until I was in my early 40's.

I moved around a lot when I was young... Those clubs just got tossed hither and yon... I went to work for a competitive man whose only passion outside of work, was golf. Being competitive myself I dragged out that poor old Wilson set to try and take him on... You should have seen the expression on his face when I showed up with this set (water damaged persimmons and all!).

We bonded that day, and he sold me is "old" Ping Eye 2's... (still have them too actually). I caught the bug... Big time!!!

I am now in my mid 50's, and a certifiable golf nut!!! Can't stop thinking of the game, or lamenting about the wasted 42 years of not playing...

I still have the Wilson's. I take them to the range from time to time to remind me of my Grandfather... I can't hot them worth a damn I'm sorry to say.

I really hate that I did not get to play with my Grandfather, or learn from him... Nor my father... by the time I became an avid serial golfer, he was physically unable to even ride around a course with me... My Dad had that passion as well... Simce my Dad and Mom divorced when I was 3, I never got close enough to share in that passion... mostly Sunday morning brunch followed by a quick return to my Mom.

I won't make that same mistake with my sons... they ride with me every chance I can get... They aren't interested in golf... YET... but one day... If they get into it late like I did... I want them to at least remember what it meant to me, my father, and my grandfather... When they do, those Wilson's will be there for them too.

So I grew up with these in the ‘80s. Stopped playing for 30 years and now having started playing again tried to change to new clubs and bought a couple of sets of cavity backs or forgiving irons only to not get on with them And go back these. So my question is this? What is the best/closest modern equivalents to these? Blades?

Going to look at these on Thursday. Price is really good, clubs look great.  What’ve I got to lose other than a few gallons of gas if it doesn’t pan out. I think they’re the original version, not the re-release because the grips are the old school version and minty fresh.25E56561-A6E2-4E68-A7D2-61FCF264DEE4.jpeg.98a24313dfe130fb26276eeb900226f3.jpeg
