What irons should I get?

Hi, I would like some input on what irons I should buy. I currently play callaway x-20 irons and have improved a lot since I got them in April 09. I was probably a 14 or 15 handicap then and now I am somewhere around a 6 or 7. I want something a little more workable and something that has a thinner appearance. Some of the irons I am thinking about are the VR splits, AP2 710, Mizuno MP-58, or R9 TP. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh and by the way I am 15 yrs. old if that makes any difference.

If your willing to cough up the money, I would go with the Ap-2's or the Mp- 52, 62, idk about the 58's.

[attachment=537947:000769.jpg]I was in a similar situation earlier this month. I was looking at Mizzys and Ap2s, and I ended up getting a great deal on these beuties. I am not sure if they are sold in the states but they are the TP forged irons from Japan.

Actually the Callaway X-Tour is a great forged iron, and they are reasonably priced through callawaygolfpreowned.com. If you are looking for a new model these may not be your thing, but in my opinion they are great performers.

I find that players who like Callaway clubs have a hard time transitioning to other clubs. Defintely play a few rounds with your choice as you might be surprised by the real world feel of them.

And the new [color=#1C2837]AP2 710 are not very good IMO. Used a set on a vacation recently (club loaned them to me) and they lacked good feedback, and frankly are not especially good at anything. Most clubs do one the following very well or are good across the board (workability, consistent length, good feedback, reward certain types of swings). I couldn't imagine what they were good at. So I decided they were good at merely having the Titleist brand on them.[/color]

At 15, I would go with a good used set of your choice, just because your body will be changing. What fits you now may not in a year. At your age and hdcp, you have a lot of great golf to come. Good luck.

X-Tours would be my choice. A little more "players-y", forged, minimal offset, but with a bit of that Cally forgiveness. I also don't really think you need new sticks. Workability is not something you need at a 7, no offense. Playing competitively, I don't casually work the ball. I know how, but I really only do it if I'm out of position or absolutely have to off the tee. Pick a go to shot shape, stick with it.

Callaway golf preowned is a GREAT site, and you'd be well served by checking them out.

You should definitely demo all sorts of clubs because everyone is different. Sometimes the clubs you want, aren't what would be best for you. I was in a similar situation. I was around a ten handicap and improved a lot after my first year of high school golf and dropped down to a 3.4. I was looking for the forged, thin, workable club in mizunos, ap2s. I went to demo them and the guy said I should try the Idea A7 irons. I wasn't sure because I had my mind set on the others. Well, I tried them and ended up liking the Idea A7 irons more than any of the others. I ended up getting the A7s...... So, try a lot of different irons. It all depends on how confident you feel hitting the clubs because confidence is key to playing better golf.

Also if you lean Mizuno at all, the mp-60s are as good as they get. Between a blade and cavity and nice and soft.

If you can, find a place where you can hit all of them! I was dead set on getting the R9s for this season but after hitting them and several other ones at GolfTown I found out that they weren't the ones. Ended up going with the PING i15s...a club that I hadnt even considered.

[color=#1C2837]The VR split cavaties are great. another option if youre looking in the nike family try CCI forged. I got a set with Project X shafts for $150. Great price for a great set that a lot of players still use on tour. Hope this helps.[/color]

I have just turned 16, I was playing off 8 at the start of last year bought some mizuno MP-52's second hand and they improved my game no end, I am now playing off a handicap off 2.
