Callaway RAZR X irons

your 2 cents?
So I'm getting a new set of irons for Christmas (all my family members asked me what I wanted and I just said gift card money to particular golf store). I've been playing the same set of irons for over 4 years now and wanting to upgrade.

I went into the store today and spent some time talking with one of the employees about different irons. She gave me a handful of 6-irons from various sets that she picked out based upon our conversation about my game, what I was looking for, etc. and told me to go hit away on the launch monitor.

The one that felt the best -- and yielded the best results -- was the RAZR X. I was skeptical of it because I have never hit a Callaway club -- wood or iron -- that I liked. I was actually kind of shocked that I liked that one the best.

Now I won't actually be making any purchases until after the holidays but I just wanted to get a sneak preview of my available options. And after forming a small crush on the RAZR X's I wanted to see if anybody who plays or used to play these irons has any feedback for me. What do you like or don't like about them?

I'm a 6 handicap who takes deeper than average divots and a ball flight that is average or maybe slightly lower than average in terms of height.

I love the RAZR X's. However, I may not be a good match for the way you play. As an 18 Hcp and I was hitting 15 year old Top Flight Tours with a regular, graphite shaft. My fitter thought my 92 mph 6 iron was a little much for those lol.

I hit G20, G15, Burner 1.0 and 2, R11, Diablo Edges, RAXR X Tours and standards. After all that I ordered a set of RAZR X standard heads with Project X flighted 5.5's. I hit them for a while at the range and they felt and hit great. The Diablo was the most forgiving but I felt like I was hitting a marshmallow much of the time. But I really liked the feel and ball flight on the RAZR X. Easier to play than the R11's, a better feel to me than the Burners and the G20 which felt a little dead while the G15 felt harsh (could have been the shaft).

I really like the mid-width sole on the RAZR X. The SGI group is just too wide and offers very little playability. With the RAZR X I have more control (now just need to learn to use it better) and the feel is solid but not harsh. With your HCP you may be better with the Tours as the top line on the RAZR X is a little thick but not bad compared to G series PINGS.

I found the shaft made a big difference. If you find the right shaft all will get the ball up, have a hot face, and forgive a lot of off center hits. Some a little more than others but not enough to make a huge difference, at least not in my scores. To me it came down to: What feels the best? What comes easily with the right shaft? Which can you get a deal on? Which has the most forgiveness but still feels good?

Robert -- good post and thanks -- good stuff there.

Dunn -- The irons I hit at the store may have been the Tours like you mentioned. I currently play R7's, which were a good set for me when I was fitted for them because I was about a 15 handicap when I got them. But I told the employee that I am now looking for something more suitable for a mid single digit player. I certainly don't want blades but I don't want something as bulky as the R7's. She suggested the RAZR's and the sole was not nearly as wide as my R7's. She said it was a club targeted for my handicap level.

So I didn't take notice but they may well have been the Tour edition.

I have hit the Razr X tours a couple of times and they are really nice. Easy to work the ball but since they are cast they don't have the same feel as a forged. Once I hit a forged from Mizuno or TM it was hard for me to want to go back to the cast. It's a REALLY nice club though so if it doesn't bother you that it's cast I say go for it.

What is the big difference between cast and forged? I knew there were two different types but never really put much thought into it and never knew what made them different.

A buddy of mine lent me a set of his old Mizuno MP 30's that he had lying around and I've been playing those the last couple weeks. I wanted to experiment with more of a player's club. Are the RAZR Tour's somewhere in between my R7's and the MP 30's?? They seemed much more of a player's club than the R7's but much more forgiving than the MP 30's. I want to get a more advanced set but probably not quite as far as the MP 30's. Maybe a few years down the road when I improve a bit more.

Thanks to all for the feedback.

The difference between cast and forged is the manufacturing process, and the fact that forged irons should be softer and have better feel than cast irons (though this is a disputed claim). I have forged Mizuno MX-200 irons, which are forgiving in their own right, but they take a back seat in regular play for my Ping G15's, which are cast, but noticeably more forgiving. Do the G15's feel as nice as the MX-200's, not quite, but it's nothing I can't get past.

As to the RAZR X Tours, I think you've summed it up pretty well as being somewhere in the middle of the R7's and the MP 30's. I have a set of Callaway X-20 Tours, and they would similarly fall somewhere between an iron like the MP 30's, and a biigger iron like the G15s. Interestingly, when I compared the X-20 Tours to the X-22 (non-tour), they were very similar in shape, size, topline and sole, with the only real difference to me being less offset on the X-20 Tours. I think the distinctions between some of these lines of irons are getting blurred.

Bottom line, you've got to hold and see and feel the irons you are looking at, hit them, see if the total package appeals to you and works for you, and go from there. IMHO though, the Callaway "Tour" (and earlier "Pro") series is a nice bridge between a bigger GI/SGI iron and a true players' iron.

I play the regular old Razr X non tours with a 6.6 cap (haven't played in 5-6 weeks though, yikes).

I've used them for a season and it basically boils down to them being an SGI club with a narrower sole when compared to others in its class. They feel decent, have the standard high GI flight, and want to go pretty straight. In terms of workability, you can move it either direction, but for flight options it's pretty much high, higher, and in orbit. I did hit the tour version at a demo day and they didn't really seem to offer anything that made me think about switching.

I'm not the best ballstriker, but my favorite thing about the Razr X irons is the distance dispersion. They're just consistent time after time, just like the commercial says :) I've really enjoyed being pin high over and over this past season.

Watch the shaft selection though. I did get mine with s300s from the factory which has given me a bit more control than the stock stuff.

on the back of the club it will either say razr x or razr x tour......check next time your there, i will agree with the workability.....you have to manipulate it pretty good to get a cut or draw but if you want straight i think golf .com illustrated as " straight shots are the order of the day" and there is nothing wrong with that............up until a week ago i had my best rounds with the tours, but i am a '' forge head" and just cant get away from that

I play to about a 10 - got the Razr X irons earlier this year - went through a fitting at a Callaway Performance Center - and the best fit for me was the stock Uniflex shaft - only adjustment was they bent them 1 degree flat.

My 6 iron swingspeed is about 84 mph - the uniflex shaft gave me the best launch angle and feel and dispersion was pretty darn good.

I had Callaway send them to me with the grips loose in the box (got the Lamkin grips that are stock on the Razr Tour) - then before I gripped them up I put ProSoft inserts in them and they feel great to me. I love the ProSoft inserts - cost about 40 cents per insert and the insertion tool I think was about $10.

I love the fact they have plenty of forgiveness but play with a thinner sole than others in their class. In the last 3 years I have played Ping G15 and Burner 2.0 and at least for me that Callaways are such a better fit. I have actually gone from a constant fade to a nice high draw. The wide sole of the Ping is just something I could not get used to - now I am a bit of a sweeper. The distance on the Burner 2.0 was totally inconsistent - I could step up and hit a 7 iron and I did not know if it was going to go 155 or 170 yards.
