I'd like to get a ballpark on how old this Anser is if it's not impossible.

Check out this Ebay Auction>>>Here

70_1.JPG

This auction is for a Mint Condition, Professionally Restored, Ping Anser 85020 putter. I doubt that this club looked any better the day it was made! If you want a classic for show, or to actually use... this is the club for you. It comes with a brand new #5 Ping grip and headcover.

The 85020 Anser was manufactured in manganese bronze and has a slot milled into the bottom of the putter. The 85020 was a favorite byf Freddy Couples and many other tour professionals. Ping experts believe the putter was manufactured from '68 to '73 only. A true Anser 85020 has MADE IN THE USA inscribed on the verticle surface of the top strap, as this one does. The 85020 has a Registered logo to the right of the Ping name on the heal of the blade, and nothing behind the word Anser on the toe.

This the real McCoy, something any golfer would be proud to own! This model increases in value every year among collectors. 85020's not in as good condition have recently sold for $250.

Thanks for having a look, and good luck! - John G.

Thanks for the link! Out of the putters that's pictured I'd say that mine is closest to the first one as far as "identifiable features". Mine has "KARSTEN", but is not followed by "CO". That's followed by "PHOENIX ARIZ 8502?" Followed by "MADE IN USA". Mine doesn't have "PATENT PENDING" or something that indicates a patent in the cavity or across the top. Also, it appears as if the toe and heel weights could be slightly different than the "Circa 1968". Again, they're very simular but there's just a slight difference in them so I can't really be certain as to exactly what it is. Simp

Daleheads are worth money. ($200+)

Scottsdale ORIGINALS (not the re-issue) are worth MORE money! ($1000+)

The anser 85020 and the 85068 that are known as the short heads (or something because of the reduced length from heel to toe compared to the ones later) are not nearly worth that much any more.

Tell me if I'm wrong, but one that is in mint condition and NOT restored still will not fetch more than $75........ right?

The market seems to have dropped out on these.

A putter like this with the large font KARSTEN stamp in the cavity is from the early to middle 1990's, I have a couple of these, but none with the serious patina like this one. I would recomend that you don't try to remove the patina, it takes a long time to get in this condition and most collectors want the nice patina. Hope this helps, Lee

In my opinion that is a late model anser, and is not collectable.

Hey Simp,

I have a Ping Zing with an identical finish and stamping but it's a late ninties early 2000 putter! I've had mine from new since christmas 2002. (cool)

Alex

Thanks Alex. That seems to go along with what the Pong Man said. That rough finish really threw me off though. Simp

Thanks for the pics, I was wondering how can u tell if its the original or the time line it was made. I just picked up a ping answer in the maganese bronze and my putter has all of the markings of the original 85020 as described. When I got it I didnt know that this was a collectible and tried bring some shine back and used a scotch pad and shined it up. The putter was almost a full brown color. Now I wish I left it like i got it. I love the slot line just like my newport beach, the feel is great! I got the ping because I was gonna have my scotty refinished, but I found a way to change the finish on my 303 stainless. I WILL post pics of the scotty that i did at home. Anything more info would b :drinks: e appreciated. thanks jva
