Starting to Horde Gear, End My Suffering Please

Howdy all! Hope you love rambling.

 

While probably nowhere near some of the people on here, I've got an excess of clubs that are burning a hole in my pocket.

 

Here's my list of clubs as of now

 

917d2

917f2 15*

917f2 18*

918 tmb 3i

818 19* hybrid

818 21* hybrid

716 ap2 4-aw

Vokey sm7 52

Vokey sm6 54,58

SC c&c newport

 

So long story short, I've got options paralysis.

 

I really cant seem to pick a setup, between going with a 3w/5w/4h or 4w/3i/4h and keeping the aw/54/58, or swapping the 50 and 54 for a 52 and either going with a 4w/19*/3i/4h or 3w/5w/3i/4h.

 

I've played around with both combinations and I seem to hit my 5 wood best off the deck, and my 3i off the tee quite well, which makes me think a 4w setup could work well. My gaps between all of the above setups would work (only one I haven't tried was the 4w, but I'd assume its fit in right above the 3i well)

 

Anyone have any insight into my issue? Should I keep everything, or just settle on a single setup and work with it and maybe have a single alternative club for the low end?

Like I said it isn't a huge amount of stuff, but I'm the type who doesn't like to have things just laying around!

Think of every club as a wedge. If you hook the snot out of a wedge, you can get a lot more than whatever a standard max is out of it. You can also hit it an inch. If you can hit all sorts of **** with every club, then, you just bring your 14 favorites.

Seems to me you should keep what you have and pick the best 14 for the course and conditions you are playing any particular round.

I started the season in a similar boat. I only play max 2 times a week and lucky if I can find an HR outside that to pitch and putt around to practice. So YMMV. I play an older parkland style course with lots of hills and tree lined fairways.

 

I go with:

 

Driver

3w 15*

2i 18*(3 iron bent strong with hydrid shaft = low bullet)

20* hybrid

4-pw

52 and 58 wedge

Putter

 

I find a 2 wedge set up is easier, stock shot with 3/4 and 1/2 options. Pretty much everything covered.

 

I like to have the extra club up top for when I need to get a half swing stinger out from under a tree(2i) or a 200 approach out of thick rough the hybrid is so much easier and margin of error is nice to have. Also I find the hybrid works well on down hill lies in the fairway where a 3 wood is tough to launch or get a solid carry number.

 

Plus on windy days the 2i/3i or driving iron is nice to have off the tee. Or if the driver or 3 wood are acting up it's a nice club to have off the tee.

 

All in all, I just found with limited time to play it was to much thinking and yardage options with 3 wedges.

 

Now I just decide what kind of lie and height on the long shots and choose the club and go. Oddly enough the punch long iron has saved more strokes this year then any other club. If I only use it twice per round but it saves me strokes it feels like a magic wand.

In my estimation, you're attempting to compensate for any possible scenario that may come up. It'd be easier on your psyche to simplify and trust your clubs.

I've been in this boat and have decided to jump ship. I'm selling all my extras (except my iron sets) and have made a decision to never go down that road again. Simpler is better.
