College Baseball

What will it take for college baseball to become relevant as a national sport? Or will its slide into obscurity continue? I prefer college sports over the pros and baseball is my favorite sport to watch. But being a college baseball fan is hard.

 

I live in Dallas and two of the DFW universities (SMU, UNT) don’t even have baseball. It saddens me.

I dont watch much college baseball until regionals/super time. I also dont watch a whole lot of MLB even though Im a huge Cubs fan. But down here, we have guys that are big LSU, Ole Miss, MS State, and Southern Miss fans that will watch a bunch of college baseball.

 

With that said, I have been keeping up with Mississippi State's current situation. They just fired their coach which was real shocking since he was supposed to be a great coach and the program is a good program. But I guess when you get caught rounding third and using the school's money to do it, I guess its to be expected.

I follow college baseball a bit especially once regionals hit. Being just down the road from Oregon St., I generally have lots of talk in my area surdounding the Beavers. I seriously doubt that college baseball will get any bigger. Just not a huge following which is unfortunate.

Living in Omaha I’m all to familiar with college baseball and I don’t think it will ever become a sport with a large national following for a few reasons. First, TV! There is no major national television contract for college baseball. Second, it is tough to follow players after college. It is not ideal to become vested in a team and its players when they’re just gonna get buried in the minors for an unknown amount of time after they leave school. Third, too many daytime games. Partly associated with my first point is the lack of night games to be televised. Fourth, the timing of the season. It begins just as college basketball is getting to the peak of its season and it ends after school is out for most colleges. This is not ideal to get the student body out to games which, in the end is how you build a tradition that people associate with. Finally, you can’t mention college sports, or sports in general, without gambling. Vegas has no interest in college baseball.

I recall a decent amount of college baseball making the airwaves during the NHL lockout in '04-05. I don't recall people watching. I like it, but can't see it gaining mass appeal.

 

Pro soccer hasn't even really caught on yet and that one seems inevitable.

It downt have the draw of the causual fans. It is sad that it doesnt. I love it.
