How far you lookin to drive?

Oceanside golf course is a good option, twilight rates are 20 to walk and another 10 for a cart. I play there a lot and is in good shape, great greens for the price point.

eagle crest, castle creek and boulder oaks are both in the 20-35 dollar range depending on what time of day but would be a bit of a drive coming from the la jolla area and are just not really very good. thats gonna be just about as good as youre going to find in north county area. Cant speak for anything south/east county.

i would just recommend getting a resident card and hammering torrey north or south at twilight. Youd be hard pressed to find many courses with twilight rates much bettter than the resident rate during the week so i would take advantage of that while you can. Being a student im assuming you have the flexibility to get out there on a weekday afternoon. to me it wouldnt be worth the 30+ minute drive to get somewhere more affordable.

Check out the JC 20/30 club. It is a cheap yearly membership to play all of the JC courses for a very discounted rate for select tee times if you are under 30 years old. Crossing at Carlsbad, Encinitas Ranch, Rancho Bernardo Inn, Twin Oaks, and Oaks North (27 Hole exec) are great. I've been using the deal for three years now and play most of my rounds at their courses just for the value. Also, a quick drive on the 52 east from UCSD and you can play Carlton Oaks. It can be a bit rough condition wise sometimes as it used to be a country club and now is a public/resort course but they have recently redone the greens and tee boxes, it is the only Dye designed course in San Diego county and has hosted NCAA tournaments and USGA events. Tiger even won an amateur event at the course.

Don’t be scared of Torrey. Play the correct tees and it’s a forgiving course. You can’t beat the price either.

Also consider Admiral Baker north or Coronado (albeit Coronado is a little tough to get on and it’s very busy)

Balboa is a great course and it’s inexpensive, however it is one of the most difficult in the county in my opinion.

Torrey North I don't think is a bad course to learn on; even the South honestly wouldn't be bad. There's really no forced carries or any hazards, basically hit it, find it, and go hit it again - especially in the summer when the rough is down. Agree if you play the correct tees it's enjoyable for all skill levels.

As for Balboa, check out the 9 hole course they have. It has a couple of short par 4s and is actually fairly designed, unlike the 18 hole course at Balboa (I have some demons at that place).

I personally learned to play at Sail Ho (now the Loma Club or whatever), worth checking out. If you're willing to go to National City, I'd look at Bonita-good walk and fair course. If you're looking for the best deal you can get, last time I was home Mission Trails was the cheapest golf in San Diego; it would only be a quick hop on the 5 to the 54 to the 8 to get there from UCSD. Baker South would be another good place to learn on. Both Baker South and Mission Trails aren't overly long.

Avoid Riverwalk - that place is a ripoff these days.

You also have good access to the range at the Fairgrounds, apparently they've got some pretty cool launch monitors out there now.

Congrats on going to UCSD. You've picked up the game in an awesome place to learn and play, good luck to you.
