Tipping Project X shafts
Hi Guys, I have a question for those with more knowledge than I.

I have the chance to aquire some non flighted px 6.0 shafts 1/4 inch over standard lenght pulled from some titlesist ZB's.

My question is would it be possible to tip them back to sandard length and if so how would that affect the overall spec iin terms of stiffness etc?

Secondly if i were to have them installed in some ping i3+ blades would the glued tip show becasue of pings unique hosel?

Many thanks for your help in advance

I don't know much about the pings, but you can butt trim the shafts and it will not affect their stiffness or playability. Tipping them a 1/4 would change the stiffness (make them stiffer). Only issue with butt trimming is you will be required to regrip, assuming they are gripped as is.

Edit: Collo got it before me, talk about the same post......

Aren't both those irons taper tips (I know the Pings are)? If you tip the shafts I don't think they'll fit in the hosel correctly.

The 0.335 taper section is only about 5/8" long. If he cuts 1/2 inch off of that he will RUIN his shafts, at least as far as using them in 0.335 irons is concerned. Taper tip shafts are made specifically for each club in a set. They are manufactured to "constant weights" which means that a three iron shaft weighs the same as a nine iron shaft. Just cut the 1/2 inch off the butt end.

I think you will find that Titleist zb irons are .355 not .335 and it continues up the shaft at a .355 tip long enough for cutting 1/4" off to not be a problem

My typo on the .335 vs .355. Hadn't had my coffee yet. However, the taper section is still only about 5/8". TT shafts are not designed to be tip trimmed. Do so at your own risk.

TT=Taper tip, which is what the irons he was talking about take and which are not designed to be tip trimmed.

so this will look unsightly but will not affect playability? I also presume it will leave it open to the elements an d liable to rust?

If the shafts came from a set of Titleist irons, they're .355" taper tip and are only meant to be butt trimmed to your desired length and not tipped (whether you can tip them and still have them fit is debatable but not advised). If you want to alter the stiffness, soft or hard step accordingly and acquire another shaft if necessary (either a 3i or Wedge blank).

Before butt trimming the shafts, dry fit them in the Pings first to find out what the playing length will be (hosel lengths, depths, head size, etc. vary between irons and +1/4" in one set may not be +1/4" in another). Butt trimming should not affect the flex of the shaft but swing weight will.

Since those Ping irons do not have a ferrule, when the shafts are installed there may be a bit of abraded tip section visible above the top of the hosel - purely cosmetic.

I am 99.99% positive they say DO NOT trim from tip ONLY FROM BUTT.

I own a set of PX HL 5.0's for a set of Ping i10's which are tapered tip and the instructions say to not tip trim. It will say on the PX site on how to trim the shafts but I think the site is down for now.

you can easily tip trim taper tip shafts. at least with my experience with s300s- they have a small parallel section on the tip. thats why tiger is able to play x100 with 1/4" tipping--it doesnt change the shaft width. im currently playing s300 with 1/2" tipping and no boring or excess sanding was needed to get them to sit right. granted- chop off an inch and i dunno, but you can tip them a wee bit.

as far as project x goes, i wouldnt bother to tip trim. i dunno about the whole constant taper thing, but i know part of the design states that by tip trimming you dont change flex. the way the weighting and kick point is, its better to soft or hard step then trim.

You may be able to tip DG shafts but I had PX HL 5.0's and in the box were installing directions and it said to only butt trim, and do not cut from tip.

Unfortunately the PX site is down right now I remember reading on there too. I am sure you could call any knowledgable club builder ask them.

you can tip Project x or DG taper tip shafts
When tipping, you change the stiffness, so your 6.0 will be 6.2 or so
Hence why they say butt trim to keep the same stiffness

Its just a matter of whether or not how well it fits back in the clubhead. Some actually fit better tipped, some dont

No idea how deep the Pings insertion depth is, and it depends on how the PX tips were trimmed, most will trim 1/2 way up a 1" ferrule.
You'll have to dry fit to see if it shows and how the shaft fits in the clubhead.

Everybody relax, I’m here
