Wood Brothers Texan

Recommended Posts

Jurren,
The "Texan" is so sharp looking. By looking at it, its somewhat obvious Dave was inspired by the 50s style MacGregor. The face and red insert remind me of a M43 or a 693. Yours is a thing of beauty thats for sure, by the looks of your original, I don't think Dave reshaped the head much thru the years, thats how good his original design was! Its really a shame that these clubs are now hung on the wall and stored away, just seemed like a short time ago they were admired being in the bag. I still enjoy a leasure 9 holes with one a few balatas, you can't beat the feel.

Very nice specimen.

Dave W told me that he ran tests with MacGregor Tour players comparing these "Fairway Instruments" to modern metal wood fairway clubs.

The WB persimmon outperformed metal because of greater ease and guarantee of good launch charcateristics. You could get these babies airborn with confidence...every time... from every lie.

Here is the first of 2 additional Texans, which Dave made for me and my son. I had the opportunity of picking these heads personally, with Dave' s advice! Both heads have perfect, tight grain + multiple carbon spots!

Ha! I couldn't get that by you could I freddiec?

Dave mentioned the pin when he refinished that club. Just like the old MacGregors!

The reason it has a neck pin is that I was hitting a DG X-300 shaft in the club back then.

Spanish Texan as per Seve request.

NOTES:

This is not my club but I have this pic in my collection. Notice no loft on sole plate as with other Tour Issued clubs.

This black finish is the same as on my Eye-O-Matic firing pin model made originally for Seve.

Dave also made a USA model Texan with a US map on the sole.

Wood Bros did make USA and Japan map models as well as the Spanish version.

Please post pics if available.

Teevons,
Are you referring to a persimmon that has the US Map as the sole plate and has the name Richard O'Hara engraved? If so, I remember seeing a few of these models before. These are beautiful looking sticks, but not a Wood Bros club. 99 percent of the Wood Bros Clubs said Texas Golf Co. and or Wood Bros.

In the mean time, here's an interview with Charlie Wood describing Dave's philosophy of persimmon wood making.

http://www.themanufacturer.com/us/profile/2016/MacGregor_Golf

And here's an interview with several tour pros recalling their persimmon days. Phil Mickelson reveals that the last persimmon he played in a tournament "was an old Wood Bros".

BTW---there's a set of Wood Bros "Championship Balance" irons for sale on that famous auction site right now.

These are the cast version of the REAL DEAL forged model. The quick tip off is the stamping on the back:

The name on the crown is Jerry Mowlds, a top 100 teacher, I purchased about 1000 of his clubs about a year ago, that was one of the clubs in the bag with many other very nice persimmons.
Texsport and Freddiec:

Thanks for the great stories and awesome pics!

I was a fan of these a long time ago...finally got one about the time things were moving to metal. The insert needed some glue (small gap appearing to one side) and I never played it much. But I still have it.

Langer seemed to have his show up in pics a lot...he was a loyal user for a long time. As I was also a Hogan Apex fan then, like him, maybe that is why he (and Sluman) caught my eye as Wood Brothers users.

Also, these clubs were HARD to come by. I think there was more mystique back then -- pre internet and eBay. It is like sports heroes...I think PART of the Hogan mystique came from the fact you had less tv and such....had to go look up Life magazines and all to see his picture and read about him.

Thanks, Lawson

Love the driver, and love the photo.
The Dude abides!
On a side note, I just read an article about Jeff Bridges in which the author says that the Coen brothers wrote the character especially for him.

When he consulted with them about how to play The Dude, they said, "just be yourself...you can't go wrong".

It seems The Dude might even be an underexaggeration of his personal style.......ends a lot of sentences with..."man". :beach:

Here are my two WB's.

First is a very early Texan. Here's what Dave Wood had to say about it:

"It is one of my very first prototypes of the Texan. This club took me a month to make in the autumn of 84'. I hand sculpted the persimmon flitch into its shape using rough files and a belt sander. I made all the components by hand, including the sole plate, which was cut from 3/32" T6 aluminum on a pantograph. The markings were hand engraved on this same pantograph- not stamped.

Bob Tway bought one of its offspring (next generation) in the spring of 85' that had a W/B/W insert (like MacG M85). He used it to become the 1985 PGA Tour "Rookie of the Year". Then played it in 86' and won four events including the PGA Championship. He was named 1986 PGA Tour "Player of the Year". You have the "Mother" of Tway's club!"

Great looking heads and not a bad grain pattern in the lot. Been to Austin and Dallas many times
in the 70s and 80s wish I had picked up some of these drivers then. Was wondering if Wood
brothers ever made any deep face drivers like the Mac LFF.

I don't ever recall seeing one, but, I'll ask dave some time about that.

You need huge blocks to make an LFF.
