TPC Sawgrass-what do i need to know (April)

Hey guys. Need some input from guys and gals familiar with TPC Sawgrass. A friend of mine and I are going down either very late in March or Early/mid April. Only be in town 2-3 days. Want to play TPC Sawgrass for sure and maybe 2 other courses.

 

Is there anything to watch for? aerification, etc? Any deals or packages? Anything to avoid?

 

Probably fly in on a Saturday, play Sunday and Monday and fly out. Other courses recommendations would be helpful as well. Nice lodging without spending $200 a night?

Stay at Sawgrass Marriott...

Play Stadium, Dye Valley, Slammer, King/Bear... If you can, play the private across from Sawgrass where the Players used to be...

I have good friends that went last year, a couple of weeks before the TPC. These are guys that take high end golf trips and know good courses. They all say the Stadium course was in horrible shape. Apparently they let it grow out before the tournament so it'll be lush for the event.

Used to belong there. Agree with BamafaninKY, always in rough shape in the 6 weeks or so before the tournament.

hotel accommodations that should be easy on the pocket are located at the end of JTB and Philips Highway (with an Edwin Watts Superstore right across the street). Bonneval Road, Lenoir Avenue, Mustang Rd....8 hotels anywhere from $54-$102 a night for dates i put in 3-22 thru 3-24. dave & busters, st johns town center, tinsletown and the beaches within a 10 minute drive

and if you want to throw a 3rd course in there along JTB check out windsor parke, which was bud cauley's stomping grounds growing up....i drive by it every day going to and from work. it's looking in great shape and will let you know when i'm there in person saturday as my company is having a tournament there

Dye Valley is now closed for 8-9 months. World golf is not that great. Many better options. LEt me know when you are in town.

That is not the time of year to play Sawgrass. The course will be in bad shape. They don't overseed and grass won't be fully in yet. They spend all their budget for the year to get ready for the tournament and the rest of the year is pretty rough. You either have to play a week or two before the tourney or right after the tourney. If you are looking for other courses in the area make the drive down to Palm Coast and play Hammock Beach. The Ocean and Conservatory are some of the best you will find and about an hour drive. They are public and will be in great shape.

I have played the one Jack designed and it was a fun track. I got a pretty good deal through golfnow and then had my fee refunded after they lost my tee time so it became a great deal. The Ocean comes into play on a few holes and has some very nice views and the greens are very tough. Play it if you have the opportunity.

I have a group of friends that played it 2 or 3 weeks before the tournament last year and they all said it was in horrible shape. For $400, it should be perfect.

[/quote]We played the Valley a lot when my buddy was a Pro at Sawgrass... It is so nice...

its rained a ton here this winter so it should be in good shape. also recommend windsor park. and the old d ross course hyde park in west jax. a great old style course. lots of history here.

Palencia, st johns golf and country is in great shape. Best greens in fl right now. Hammock beach is a great track (ocean) i played there two weeks ago. Ok shape greens were good but not great. Rolled true and around 10-10.5.

Just played TPC Stadium course this weekend and unfortunately I have to echo the comments of posters above.

The worst condition of any 'high-end' course I've played, full stop.
Greens were very poor, more than one putt caught some air. Had I not seen this thread before going I would have been hugely disappointed. Instead it just confirmed the above.

Also played Sawgrass Country Club, Ponte Vedra, Windsor Parke, and Hyde Park.
Hyde Park was my favorite of the 5, but then I like traditional layouts and being able to walk

Enjoy you round at TPC, but do arrive knowing it's not in good shape.

I played it in the spring a couple years back and the course conditions weren't great, but it is still an awesome experience.

** March 7th **

 

Ronstar Application

Monday started the process for weed prevention and fertilization by applying a Ronstar on Polyon carrier, 35-0-0 from wall to wall throughout the golf course. With mother nature being a factor in all golf course practices, beating the rain and having nature help with the watering process was perfectly planned by the agronomy staff. The polymer coated Ronstar was applied by 2 Lely tractor spreaders which covered a majority of the course, and 4 Anderson's rotary spreaders around the greens for a more precise throw. The application will minimize the emergence of annual weeds, with our focus being on crabgrass and goosegrass which will begin to emerge when the spring soils reach a temperature between 50-55 degrees.

Pressure Washing Bulkheads

The little things that we do at TPC Sawgrass seem to go unnoticed at times. One of those being pressure washing all the bulkheads. This is a job that if left unintended, would be very noticeable during tournament time and throughout the golfing season. We begin in January and finish around mid March. One of the most photographed holes in all of golf, number 17 on THE PLAYERS Stadium Course, would not look the same if we did not have employees keeping the bulkheads surrounding the green in perfect condition.

I've played there a bunch over the years and although it's a great course and a cool experience because your familiar with all the shots from watching The Players, it's rarely in what I would consider even "acceptable" condition for what they charge.

they had to move the tpc from march cause of our increasing brutal winters here in jax. darn global warming

Played it in January and fairways and greens were in good shape. St. John's golf and country club is a great course as well for not much cash.

Play The Stadium, forget Dye's Valley and play King and Bear instead.
