One of these facilities is opening north of Atlanta (http://www.ajc.com/weblogs/biz-beat/2014/feb/25/topgolf-hiring-450-plus-new-alpharetta-complex/). Looks like there are only 10 others in the world. Anyone ever been to one?

Yes. We have three of them in the Dallas area (one in Dallas proper and two in suburbs). Definitely not big on practicing there, but tons of fun to get a group together drink whatever you like to drink and hit some balls. We often will have intern events there with my firm or happy hours there. It's fun. If you are looking for serious practice - probably not your place.

I used to go all the time when I lived in DC. I really liked it. Good food and drinks so it's fun to go with a group and just socialize and play some games. They used to have a $20 all-you-can-hit before 1PM deal and I did that a lot on weekends and weekdays when I didn't have class until the afternoon. It's actually pretty useful to know exactly where your ball lands when you're aiming at a green. Other than the deal, it can get pretty expensive though.

Top Golf is awesome! It's definitely not a practice facility. It's more like bowling for golf...ie drink, hang out and compete with friends. I'm in ATL and can't wait for it to open.

Went there as a part of my bachelor party weekend in DC last summer. As others have said, as long as you're not there for serious practice it's a blast. We stayed there a good 3-4 hours and the time flew by. The level of alcohol consumption had something to do with that I'm sure, but I digress.

The one downside - It can be a bit pricey if you're there for just one day but if you don't mind spending a few bucks it's definitely worth going there with your buddies.

We have 3 of them around DFW. They're a blast to go grab some drinks, fried food, and hit a few balls.

Just visited my folks in The Colony, TX and they have one there. Went by on Friday around 1:30 thinking it would be dead since most folks would be at work. 2.5 hour wait! Said no thanks. Came back the next morning at 9am when they opened and got right in. Price was $20/hour from 9am-noon, then $40/hour from noon-close. That is per bay pricing, so if there are 4 people in your group it's still the one price. I was on the middle level. Not really comfortable with heights and this was testing my balance for sure. Made a lot of arm only swings until I got more comfortable being that close to the edge. There is an electronic ball dispenser on the mat. Just wave club over sensor and it spits out a pill for you. Will echo what others have said, it is not really a place for serious practice. More for socializing and enjoying some time with friends playing games and drinking/eating. The facility itself is pretty nice with full bar/restaurant. Will be fun as a once a year kind of thing, but I'll stick to regular driving ranges for real practice time and money saving. Could hit at least 2 large buckets for the same price as 1 hour there.

There's one in the Chicago suburbs. Great for casual get togethers with friends and family and play some games and have some food and drinks. Not what you're looking for if you want to practice or just hit balls.

And the one by me is packed on the weekends.

It's pretty fun, I think it's a good way to at least get people introduced to golf. Kind of like a mixture of golf, darts, skeeball, and a bar/restaurant. They changed up the pricing recently so it is a little cheaper if you go with a group.
It's not golf, and it's not really range time either, but it is fun...
