Tad Moore question

Ive got a tad moore 1st production 1998 shorty that i am refinishing. Any one know what kind of finish i can do since the insert is copper and there is no way to remove it? Thanks.

Ive got a classic with an insert and i'm determined to get it out in one piece. I've asked Tad and hes not revealing anything, which is fair enough its his product after all and he can still make a living refinishing these old putters. If anyone does figure it out then please share. I presume it may just be bonded in but there could be more to it.

Update, I've tried to heat the insert......nothing. I've even put it in the freezer to see if it will shrink and still nothing. I might just rust blue mine and buff up the copper

You can gun blue the putter or even do a Plumb brown (Birchwood-Casey) finish, which requires some heat, but nothing hot enough to damage the insert. I plumb browned one of my SC TeI3's and the insert was fine.

I have spoken to Tad about it and he said he can do it no problem. It's just I want to do it myself as I've worked on fifty or so tel3 putters in the past. Plus it's something like £190 to have it redone.

Wow, that much? Those inserts looked poured in, then machined flat. Not sure you can get them out, may be mechanically locked in. I'd skim face-mill a new surface to make that new.

I believe they were done by bettinardi as well. I'm gonna try and get it a little hotter to see if there is some kind of super epoxy holding it in there. If it's the like the stuff ping used then it will take some heat.
I see how it goes and I'll post some pics if the prep work

Finish is Black Diamond Star Nickel. Insert is put in with adhesive. Insert is 99.99% pure copper. To replace the insert and refinish is expensive but I can do it. Is it possible to save the insert- sometimes.

After the nickel was stripped (professionally) I decided to have a go at removing the insert and it worked perfectly. I don't really want to tell you how I removed it as I know Tad earns a living refinishing these and I would like to take that knowledge away from him.

Now that the insert it out, it's off for black oxide and hopefully be re-assembled in the next few weeks. I can't wait, I think it will look awesome!

Well, blacking worked out well, just need to fix the insert in place and do the paintfill. I'll probably fit a new shaft as well as the original was a little rusty.

Wow, awesome job. I have the same putter and while I have no plans for putting it in the bag those pictures make me want to have it refinished. So beautiful.

These feel buttery soft, just like the tel3. The shaft in mine was like the bullseye style satin fluted which is a massive contributory factor to the feel. Shame you can't buy these shafts anymore as they'd feel great on something like a Santa Fe.
