Allow myself to introduce.... Myself.

Recommended Posts

Hey all I just thought I'd say hey since I'm new to these here parts and you may or may not see me asking lots of dumb questions since I'm terrible at golf and came here hoping to find some decent info.

Just a little background on me and my golf history:

My actual name is Matt , I'm almost 30 years old and I currently live in Burlington, Vermont. I first started playing golf when I was 18 or so really just as an excuse to go out drinking with the boys, mess around on golf carts and get away from the women in our lives for a few hours.

I ended up basically dropping golf for a few years, not because I didn't want to play but I really had no one to play with and wasn't passionate about it enough to drive me to go.

Late in the 2012 season a buddy of mine got me back out there and I came to realize how much I missed the sport. Unfortunately it was too late to golf any more that year so I had to wait all winter to get back to it. Last summer was a mild success, playing an ok amount if golf. (Approx a dozen rounds or so) My love for it has grown immensely but unfortunately I still suck. So this winter I've been determined to do something about it.

I've been hitting the virtual driving range at my local indoor golf place, Gonzo's HD Sports, trying to improve what is prob the worst part of my game, my tee shot, driver especially. Steve, the owner of Gonzos, has been super helpful already and I'll be taking lessons from him soon. (He's also a local club pro) He spent ten minutes with me a few weeks ago and what he showed me in those few minutes literally added 30 yards to my drive (both on average and max) while also increasing accuracy and consistency. So I'm excited about taking lessons with him to see what else can happen.

What you will prob see me talking about most is what confuses me the most: what equipment and setups should I be using and how do I know what is best for me etc.

I need some different clubs at some point due to the fact that A) Mine aren't very good and B) I'm 6'3" and should be using irons 1" over standard, which my current ones are standard. I plan on getting professionally fitted before buying but there is still much that's really just preference, and this is where I'll be looking for input.

Anyway, if you actually bothered to read all that I hope it wasn't too boring. I guess that's all from me for now. If any if you are VT golfers get at me.

-Matt

Welcome to WRX, Matt!

Continue with the lessons, best thing you can do for you golf game (better than any single piece of equipment, or a whole new bag for that matter, can do for your game). I'm in the same boat as you, and lessons make the game so much more enjoyable.

As far as clubs, last season I thought I needed a new set (because like you, mine were outdated and not brand name, more of a players style iron when I would likely benefit from newer GI irons, and had graphite shafts which after research I figured were part of the reason I was spraying balls left and right), so I began searching for my first new to me set. I made a short list of 3-4 sets of irons I would be happy playing with, and that would benefit me, and began waiting for a good deal on ebay to pop up. As long as you are patient and do your homework so you don't end up buying knock-offs or beat up clubs, you can find a really good deal on last year's models. Now if money isn't so much of an issue, disregard all of that, search the forum and read some reviews. Plenty of information on here that will start you in the right direction, then go out and just start hitting clubs!

Lots of great info on the site, just take it all with a pinch of salt. You will see people constantly talking about the latest and greatest gear, and your wallet won't like you if you get sucked in ;)

Welcome aboard, look forward to hearing from you!

edit: just reread the part about your plan to get fit for clubs, scratch everything I said, lol, hit a bunch of options and you will find a great set! One piece of advice I've seen on here that might do you well, however, is to be mindful of your lessons and progress. It's best to take a majority of your lessons (at least until you hit some sort of major plateau in your game) before spending a ton of dough on getting fit for a whole new set of clubs. If you buy clubs, then start making extreme adjustments to your swing, the result of your fitting (and possibly the choice of shafts, etc) might now be obsolete / not a good match for the new swing.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
