I guess the better question might be, would a club company ever pay a player to game ONE single club and if so, would it be worth it?
yes. i could see taylormade paying someone to use just the driver. "#1 driver in golf" is huge for them; how many people do you see with brand new TM drivers every year but nothing else worth mention in the bag? a lot.

Is Phil still gaming the X-Forged in Houston this week, or has he switched back to the Apex Pro or the RAZR MBs? Anyone know?

That's interesting that he went back to the X Forged from the Apex Pros.
I would be willing to bet that he hit the Apex Pro's too far. I did some pretty extensive testing with them over the last few days and they produce very high ball speeds.

The Yonex PM wedges were also similar in shape to the Ping Eye wedge. Phil played Yonex for quite some time.

I have a buddy who worked for Yonex at the time and he would tell me how irritated the higher ups would get with Phil. My understanding was Yonex did not have a tour van to allow Phil to tinker with his equipment and he would end up at rival manufacturer's tour vans and inevitably something of theirs would end up in his bag like the Great Big Bertha. I remember two specific incidents he mentioned. One being when Phil showed up at a tournament in Hawaii with Rifle shafts in his Rekin Super 10 irons. My friend said Yonex bigwigs flew over there ASAP and told him to put the graphite back in and he said steel gave him his best chance to win. Eventually they gave in but by that point everyone knew Phil was leaving. The other was when he dropped his PM wedges and went back to his Ping Eye 2's. The thinking was we let this guy design his own signature wedge and he can't be bothered to play it?

An admitted Phil homer I LOVED the Super ADX Forged, Rekin Super 10, PM Wedges, blade putter and the Rekin Super 02 series of woods. I would still game any of those items minus the Rekin Super 02 driver. 300 cc's just don't cut it anymore. I consider that a small three wood nowadays.

Yep. In my earlier days of trying to qualify in the Chrysler National Long Drive Competition (eventually became the ReMax event we have today) I used Yonex drivers because they had a long drive team and the 200E driver for long drivers to use. They would never work with you on shaft options for anything. I had a set of Yonex irons and broke two clubheads off in one round back in the 1990's. The shafts just twisted towards the clubhead and broke off. The torque was just too high on those shafts. I had better luck with their graphite prospec shafts but eventually I just reshafted the irons with dynamic gold. I love Japanese equipment but back in the day they were notorious for not working with customers when it came to custom options.

13' X forged irons still in the bag.

Phil did not seem to get along with the Apex pros at all.
Yeah, I'm sort of glad. I liked the feel better and I think the Xforged look better also. Beautiful iron!

Also noticed he has an X2 Hot Fairway under the Big Bertha fairway head cover which I thought was odd. Maybe he likes the Bertha colors better. I know I do. The X2 Hot headcovers don't look that great especially with the blue Callaway staff bag.

Was also using the X2 Hot hybrid too.

The head cover thing is interesting. Most pros will have the companies current model head covers on their clubs even if they don't play the club that matches the head cover. The only exception I've seen to this is Tiger Woods'. He uses the 2013 (1.0?) Covert fairway metals and has the matching head covers, but Rory uses the same fairway metals and he has the 2.0 head covers. It was the same way when Tiger had that SQ2 5 metal forever, he had the matching head cover.
