Bridgestone j40 cb review

Hello all I've read on this forum quite a lot but don't post too often so I thought it was time to give back some info since I have received so much. So just a little about myself. I'm 15, a freshman in high school, and I have aged for the varsity team since 7th grade . I have a driver swing speed of 103 on average but I have great ball striking on the driver(1.5 smash factor). My weakness is by far my 60 yard pitch shots. I'd say iron play is my strongest part other than off the tee. And just for reference, I currently carry a 3.7 handicap index with ten 18 hole scores posted in the last 2 and a half weeks.

So, my setup with the j40 Cb's is 4-p with project x 6.0 flighted. My previous irons were a set of rocketbladez tours with kbs tour stiff but my friends dad offered me the j40 cb so I decided to give them a try. I've been playing with them since the beginning of the golf season for my high school which is in the ISL(northeast prep schools). Our season is going well. Anyways, on to the review.

Looks:

Simply put, the best looking iron out there. The shiny chrome combined with the dull metal look is amazing. The etched Bridgestone logo is the cherry on top.

Performance:

This is what you all really care about. Ok, so the flight is far better than the taylormade. I hit the Bridgestones a little lower but what's even better is how the Bridgestones hold their line. With the taylormades, I spun the ball a ton so the wind was a huge problem. Now the wind is much less of a factor. I think a lot of this is due to the shift change and therefore a drop in spin rate, but I do believe the heads have something to do with it too. Continuing off of spin rate, I have gained about a club and a half distance with the Bridgestones even with more traditional lofts! . This is not what I was expecting since taylormade makes so much hype about their distance. But I guess the tours just spun too much for me. Lastly, the feedback on the Bridgestones is awesome. When struck well they feel amazing and rocket off the face towards the pin. When struck slightly off center you may lose 5-7 yards, but nothing drastic. If you really hit it poorly, well these irons aren't for you...

Overall: I love these irons. The looks are second to none, the feel/feedback is awesome, and the performance is great too. I've gained distance without sacrificing feel or accuracy, something that does not happen often. The only thing about these irons is that they are not the most forgiving irons but I would say any player with consistent striking could play these irons effectively. I hope this helps anyone considering these irons because I have seen a couplethreads going around aabout these. I think any player who is consistent should definitely give these a strong look!

Spot on young dude! I agree with all except the distance gain. Your spin difference might account for that, but my experience has been less distance across the board, yet it is a more repeatable and accurate distance. I have yet to experience a hot spot on the face that equates to a sudden increase of yardage. The Bridgestone's are very consistent with yardages.

Thanks for adding this review.

Did you have the KBS Tour 90s in your RBTs or the KBS Tours? That could account for the higher launch and spin.

Nonetheless, great review and great game for a youngin!

Id also consider the J38's. I have the cb's with pjx 6.5 and they are far and away the best irons I've ever hit. I've also tried the J40's and didn't see any reason to spend more money on those. You can get the J38's for basically nothing.

I would agree spot on with the review. Great feedback on mishits and no greater feeling then purring them. I will warn you that they are closer to the more traditional lofts so don't expect to be hitting a 160 yard pw.

Agree with the review I also have found the B'stones to give great feedback with a wonderful feel when struck well. My set is also the 6.0 flighted and I have found the ball flight to be just what I wanted. I did not find a distance gain either but that is not what I wanted. Their consistency with great feel, sound, and flight, plus the fact that they are IMO the best looking CB club out there, made my decision easy.

I have this exact setup and have a driver SS around 105 at the highest, but an average of 102. The PX 6.0's were too stiff for my smooth tempo swing, but I love PX shafts. Maybe that's not the case for you, but I did want to point out that you're gonna need to work a little harder to get the most out of those shafts if you don't have an aggressive load at that SS.

As for the 60 yard pitch, I'd consider that a strong part of my game and it can be played a number of ways. A full, smooth 60* should get you that yardage for a high/soft flop, a half shot with a 50* will do it if you need to check up, and you can run one in low with a 8 iron 1/4 shot.

I never noticed their unforgiving-ness as I was coming off 710 MB's, but yeah, if you compare them with SGI's you'd notice pretty quickly. Hitting these flush are incredibly addictive. You also have the added advantage of knowing your exact yardages (no hotspots).

Great review and definitely good luck on your career, your HC is impressive and it sounds like you're a couple good go-to shots away from the plus side.

These r absolutely on the top of my list as I am in the market for something to replace my R7TP. I have no where to try them so I may have to buy blind. I hear nothing but great things about these irons. We will see. Any pics?

I had the regular tours, not the 90's. I believe the rbt's are intended to be high launching head though so that could be it. Plus I have a pretty quick transition at the top so I tend to overspin the ball.

Thanks for the tip! I'll have to try that. My problem is that I decelerate through the ball which leads to my inconsistent strikes, usually fat. I think the full 60 could help because right now I try to hit a 3/4 54 but it is just too inconsistent.

Still using the J40's? I have a few sets, I missed the boat though, only have used sets. I wish Bridgestone would just sell these new again!

I'm in the Northeast as well, will be playing Saturday!!!

I sold my set to a friend of mine, for his son's graduation present! He had hit them and was eyeballing them for a few months and loved them, so was a good gesture on my part. Then I realized, I let the best set of irons I have ever played leave my bag! I chased that feeling and turf interaction for years, to finally come back to Bridgestone with the TourB-Xcb and couldn't be any more elated! The TourB's may actually be that much better in every way. Same great Endo forge feel, same turf interaction, and look great in the bag.
