I played with a guy from Winnipeg earlier this year that drove 8 hours just to play some run of the mill municipal courses here in South Dakota because Winnipeg still had snow. That's dedication!

You have to ask yourself, how many times will I have the chance to play a famous and historic course?

When I was young I had an invitation to play Augusta. I said NO because I wanted my first trip to Augusta to be playing in The Masters. Well, I never did qualify to play in The Masters and I have yet to play Augusta.

Scioto is nice and historic, but comparing it to Augusta National is Apple to Oranges, or Apples to Car Tires. What were you thinking by the way? Passing up Augusta? The only person that I have ever heard with a good excuse was someone who didn't play because his only daugther was getting married on the day of the invitation. I also know that he thought long and hard about rescheduling that wedding that he was paying for.

Are you getting out for free? 16-hours of driving plus 4-5 hour round is a huge cost even if the round was free.

Well, the drive is about 450 miles, one way, which I'll make on a tank. The round is covered, but I'll be taking a caddy with a buddy of mine.

Scioto would be the best (highest reviewed, most historic, etc.) course I'd be able to play on, but...it looks like I will get the chance to play PV later this summer.

So I live maybe 3 minutes from Scioto CC. I have played it a handful of times. From experience of playing the course, I don't think it's really worth a 8 hour drive. There are three other courses in Columbus I would play over Scioto and I'm still not sure id drive 8 hours each way to solely play one of them. Maybe for Village or the Golf Club, but, I wouldn't do it for Scioto.

Scioto is perfectly manicured. But the layout itself is nothing overly spectacular. Its a very traditional, old school Donald Ross design. One of those typical Ross designs where what you see is what you get. Everything is right in front of you. It's on a pretty small piece of land and the holes are somewhat on top of each other. You aren't going to get any spectacular views beyond the lush green grass in front of you.

Just my 2 cents but I've played 3 of the big 4 courses in Columbus and Scioto kind of pales in comparison to the other 2 I have played (Muirfield and Double Eagle).

With that said, if you are playing with a great group of people and simply love playing nastalgic courses, than it would still be a great day.

Thanks for the input. There's a slight chance we could get on Firestone Wednesday morning, but it hasn't been set up yet.

I'm actually closer to 50/50 on driving out there now...if only I were single without kids and responsibilities. This decision would've already been made!

As I said, at that time in my life I though I would be playing in The Masters. Only major I haven't played in. My bad luck.

My opinion? Go for it. I was on the fence to play an exclusive country club on the west coast of the Florida panhandle because it was a 2.5 hour drive. I'm sure glad I did play, it was a fantastic experience that I'll remember for a long time. I've found the only things I really truly regret in life are things I didn't do.

I think know the answer, but I wanted to get confirmation to make myself feel better about it...

Would you drive 8 hours (one way) to play Scioto and have to drive back that same day?
16 hours drive time plus play a round of golf the same day - pardon me but that's a bit too much. If its a great course simply get a hotel for the night.

Impressive.

You play to "scratch" behind the wheel.

There's a lot of scratch Canadians that run out of tolerance for snow in Mid Feb every winter

Disappointed nobody has commented on me working in a "We're the Millers" reference, though I now realize I initially used REGERTS and not RAGRETS ... my bad
