Marion, Massachusetts Golf?

Hey there,

 

Taking a trip up in 2 weeks to Marion, MA for a 3 day weekend for a wedding. You guessed it, looking for some advice as potential spots to play and places to avoid. It looks like New Bedford and Falmouth are close by?

 

Apologies for the ignorance, but I have never been to the area but am looking forward to escaping the 100 degree temps in Florida for a couple of days. Looked extensively through previous threads but it was hard to tease out specifics as to where to go. Seems like a lot of places that I've looked up are private?

 

If anyone who is from there or been up there has any advice, that would be awesome. Not looking for anything spectacular, just playable courses (the wife is coming) and maybe some nice scenery. Trying to keep it as cheap as possible, definitely not picky over green speed/condition, etc.

Acushnet River Valley is the best bet for public option. Send me a PM with dates you will be in the area, and I may be able to get you on at New Bedford CC, a Donald Ross gem

Grew up in Marion. Some great tracks within 30 minutes or less.

- Pinehills Plymouth (30 minutes)
- Acushnet River Valley (15 minutes)
- Bay Pointe Club (15 minutes)
- Brookside Club (30 minutes)
- Poquoy Brook (20 minutes)

And if you are just looking for a nice relaxing, no frills round check out Little Marion Golf Club and Rochester Golf club. Both great fun and very close.

THe only issue with Poquoy brook is bring bug spray. Always gnat filled when I go there. But Brandy has a great list, and in the order I'd choose them too.

Allendale CC in Dartmouth is Semi-Private -- basically call and make a tee time -- decent track, condition, greens...

Yes, I've been there 10 years and we've been struggling to keep the membership up so we decided to allow limited outside play to counter increased dues.

Early on at Poquoy Brook Golf Club in southwestern Mass., you face your sternest test of the day, the 2nd hole. It's a long and tight par 4 with a very sharp dogleg to the right and a fairway Gloria Vanderbilt would have trouble fitting into. The green slopes heavily from back to front, making even 18-inchers from above the cup perilous. The good news? The No. 1 handicap will be comfortably behind you if you escape undamaged.
