Irving King Custom Made Iron Set

Recommended Posts

I've seen some post on here in the past about Irving King woods and irons and a few pics of some woods but never anything on Irons and we just finished cleaning up and old set we recently took on trade in our shop so I just thought some people might enjoy actually seeing some Irving King irons. Especially since there is basically nothing on them at all on the internet and they seldom show up for sale anywhere.

Very interesting set and this old guy does not remember ever seeing a set of these. Can't judge the shaft diameter in the pics but is that some sort of "fat shaft" (of the day) as they look to be the same size as the hosels? Any idea what S.S. they irons are made of?

Sorry about digging up an old topic, but this is about the only thing on the entire internet about Irving King irons. I dug my old set out of the attic, these are different than the ones pictured by the OP. I haven't played in a couple of decades and had bought these used from a Pawn Shop at the time. I think I'll be hitting the driving range with them soon. Swung the 9 in the backyard a little today, they are pretty sweet feeling clubs. Anybody ever seen any like these?

I use to live about 50miles from Irving Kings shop in Shreveport La. back in the 60’s & 70’s. I have about a dozen of his Persimmons. Best persimmons I’ve ever played. Still do! You have any pics of those irons?

Irving King Sr. was my grandfather, and Irving King Jr. was my dad. I worked in the golf shop when I was 14 yrs. old in 1973 doing various things. I remember most all of the people and processes used. Big carboard boxes of persimmon wood heads would come in from Tennessee, and "Sr." would shape them on belt sanders. The steel shafts were True Temper brand. We used "Cats Paw" rubber type glue for the grips to be attached. Common masking tape was wrapped around where the grip was to go on and the Cats paw was brushed on with a paint brush depending on how thick or thin the customer wanted the grip. Yes, they made woods, irons, and putters. Irons were #1-#9 size and also a pitching wedge and a sand wedge. the irons had a sand blasted face. The woods were sprayed various colors in a paint booth, and irons were hand painted.

I have a set of "King's Stainless Custom Supreme" irons that were my Dad's in the 1960's. Are these from your family? They have Tru Temper Pro Fit shafts.

I have a set of Irving King irons that I purchased from him in Shreveport in 1976. I, also, had the persimmon woods but they wore out after about 10 years of use. I am currently looking for a 4 iron to replace the one that was broken. Anyone know where I can find such an item? Chuck Elliott

When you say broken do you mean the shaft? If so you would probably be better off getting it reshafted as opposed to locating another.

Interesting, they used glue for shoe soles for the grips.  Vs 2 way tape and solvent.
