New Mission: Find a good Long Neck putter for $100 or less

I used to own a CLN Prototype and liked the putter. I have recently like the short neck (santa fe) style much more, but can't seem to putt with it anymore due to it reinforcing a very gated swing. I am putting much better with my ping anser, but am also thinking about going back to a long neck, face balanced putter....however, since this will be another "experiment", I really don't want to drop $300-500 on a nice putter. I would ideally like to find a nice milled long neck putter for under $100.

Any thoughts on what I should look for?

BTW: my Wilson/TM TPA XVIII experiment was a big bust. I like the Ping Piper H putter I got, but I putted terribly with it.

I know it is not milled but I recently picked up an Odyssey White Hot No. 6 long neck from Callaway Pre- Owned for under a hundred dollars. The putter was used but in fine shape. Great for fast greens where you want a soft touch.

thanks for the replies. I've checked out the Odysseys, but there's two things about them that I don't really like:

1) the white hot insert (I think they are a little TOO soft for my liking)

2) that is a "slant" long neck. I would MUCH rather get one with a long plumbers neck if possible.

Here are a few Ping options for your consideration:

 

Ti 4 - face balanced, with longer ti plumber neck-type hosel

 

Specify Anser/Ally/Zing long neck - face balanced but not milled

 

Anser 5/Zing 5/Pal 5 - not milled

I think even the most beat up one would sell for much more than $100. I've seen some REALLY beaten up Camerons go for over $200. You have some nice long necks...wanna hook up a fellow asian brother in need? :russian_roulette: hehehe

How about the Ping Anser 5 KS. It is certainly a long neck and is face balanced. Since you are putting better with your Anser it may be worth a try. I picked up a BeCu off Ebay for a reasonable price, so I know they are out there.

You could try a John Byron Dalehead long neck. They made them in both stainless and carbon. They should be well below $100.

anyone have any experience with these putters? Highly doubtful for the Lynx...but someone has probably owned that TD as they were quite popular at one time. That seems like a pretty good deal on that putter too. Someone is selling that exact same putter for $250?!?

What does CLN stand for? Cameron Long Neck? Copper Long Neck? Something else?

 

Also, I'm familiar with the Scotty Cameron CLN putter series, I just don't know what it stands for.

Having just tried to o the same thing for my own experiment I went to GolfSmith. I purchased the Viper Tour 2 for ~26 plus a shaft and grip. It is face balanced. The putter is actually not that bad and my experiment may have just become my gamer.

govtcheez: The Tourstage PV-2 should be an interesting putter. You might want to try out the Teardrop TD31, if you like soft feel and black finish thats a great putter. I have 2 teardrop putters now and i love them.

cool....does the roll face technology actually help roll the putts better? I doubt that it could hurt. I just don't know if I can get used to setting up the putts if the face has a "bulge" on it. Perhaps I can send it out to get it milled flat?!? Also, what are these TD putters made out of? It looks like carbon steel with a really dark Black Ox finish. If so, that's an awesome deal and should feel like butter.

Sent email regarding a John Byron LN..............before I read your original post completely.

If you are very open minded, RayCook has a model of the Blue Goose that is a milled putter with a long neck. I believe it is a BG-V. I have one on the bench, but it has been "worked over". You might try that auction site and see if anyone is moving one of these.

You wont notice the "bulge", it looks pretty flat to the naked eye. You got it, they are made of soft carbon steel so they feel very "butterish". The putter rolls the ball pretty nicely.
