86' Masters

Best ever
This has to be the best week in golf. Every year when I watch the high lights of the 86 Masters and I've must have seen the replay atleast 40 to 50 times, i just think that what went on that day at Augusta not only added to the mistique of Jack, but just proves that he might be (notice I said might be), the Greatest Champion of all time. I truly believe that the game that they played prior to all the hitech hot balls , is a different game than they play today. Today it's mostly about power, where in Jacks era it was true shot making. I know Tiger will probably surpass Jack in victories down the Road, but could he repeat the true greatness of Jack's feats? I don't want this to begin a Tiger vs. Jack feast, but just want to recognize the impact that Jack made on the Masters and in Golf. Enjoy the Masters everbody.

The thought of what Nicklaus did that afternoon in 86 is pretty uplifting, and another laurel in a great career.

Best ever? It's certainly up there, and the only one that I would put up against it is fairly obvious . . . the 97 masters. For influence on the Masters, 1997 completely changed how Augusta National viewed its own golf course and was the cause for dramatic alteration and lengthening . . . it is NOT the same course it was, and that's because of TW's performance that year (and he did it with a wound ball, though admittedly he did use metal woods).

Maybe Crenshaw's win after Penick's death . . . another sentimental favorite.

It's #1 for me but Crenshaw's victory and Tiger's dominance in '97 are right up there too.

I was actually thinking about the '86 Masters this morning, and specifically about how I just can't appreciate fully it, speficically the emotional aspects of Jack winning a major that late in his career. I'm a young guy, and I grew up on Tiger, I started following golf about 96. Jack Nicklaus never really meant that much to me other than someone to be respected for his records and his ability, but I never had any kind of connection with him since I never saw him play live or saw his career progress. I'm going to have to wait to see if Tiger falls off a bit as he gets older and then brings the magic back for a Sunday at a major, maybe then I'll have a similar tournament to remember.

I'll never forget watching the 86 Masters, I had just played 18 holes myself in the morning and watched it in the clubhouse (I was a kid back then). It was incredible. I agree with the above posts about Crenshaw's win a few years later, that was also very very special. Tiger's in 97, yup, he just crushed the field and walked over everybody.

86 Masters was one of the best ever, hands down. So many guys in contention to win coming down the stretch, and all the great shots that Jack hit...I mean some of those shots were out of control and not to mention he was 45 or 46 years old. That is just crazy. Hiting 3 irons stiffy, almost making an ace....it was out of control.

I can remember watching the entire telecast and pulling for Nicklaus to capture one more major. Having his son on the bag for the tournament had to mean a lot to him as well. In some of the articles and interviews since then you could tell they knew it was something special that was likely to never be repeated.

My second best memory is Crenshaw's victory in 95. If someone had written a story with that plot and outcome no one would have believed it in a million years.

I would say that '97 was the best ever, just because it was one that had a lot of significance in the golfing world and the boundaries that Tiger broke in that win. It also established his future presence on tour. Jack's '86 masters was still pretty amazing and is a extremely close second place in my opinion.

'88 and '97 were pretty memorable too, but, for sheer epic drama '86 wins it for me too.

A legend of the game's last hurrah, on the greatest course in the world winning in that way? Absolutely legendary.

1975 was a fantastic finish. On Sunday, Nicklaus was playing ahead of Weiskopf and Miller and passed them. Each needed to birdie 18 to get into a playoff. Weiskopf bombed one on 18 tee, and both he and Miller had about 12 footers for birdie. They both missed by inches.

Also, in the 1975 Masters, Lee Elder became the frist African American to play.
