Cutting off the tip vs butt

q. I have cut a butt end of my driver by a half inch and noticed the higher ball flight. I, of course, added weights on the head to compensate the decrease in the driver's swing weight. what's the difference of cutting the tip of the driver by a half inch and the butt of the driver by a half inch?

q. I see a lot of tour players cutting their tips... why's that?

I think tipping stiffens the shaft and brings the launch down a hair (2 people have told me as much). I'm in the middle of sorting that out with my hybrid, and would like some confirmation on this as well.

When you trim the shaft butt, you do not change the measured stiffness of the club, however it will generally feel a little stiffer since you have shortened the "beam length" of the shaft and it will bend less.

 

When you shorten from the tip, you remove the softer tip and put more stiff butt in that shorter beam - so you stiffen the flex of the club.

 

When you add weight to the head to bring swingweight up - in either case - you soften the shaft flex.

1. after trimming 1/2 inch from the butt, how would u rate the stifness of the shaft?

before: 6.0 rifle after 1/2 cut from butt: 6.5 rifle??

 

 

2. after trimming 1/2 inch from the tip, how would you rate the stifness of the shaft?

before: 6.0 rifle after 1/2 cut from tip: 6.5 rifle? (i know it should be stiffer than #1... )

 

3. after trimming 1/2 inch from the butt (3 pts decrease in swing weight), adding weights were done in the head to compensate the loss of the swing weight (6 grams were added to increase the 3pts of the swing weight), how would you rate the stifness of the shaft?

before:6.0 rifle after 1/2 cut from the butt: 6.5 rifle? after adding weights in the head: back to 6.0 rifle??

if you cut any off of the tip it will either stiffen up the shaft or set it to the exact specs that you want it. when you cut it from the butt end it will help you get the exact length that you want, but at the same time you are changing the kick point in the shaft. the more you take off the top of the shaft the lower you will make the shafts overall kick point, and the lower the kick point the higher your ball flight trajectory will be. what shaft are you playing?? knowing the shaft and the driver head it will be easier to figure it out
