Random thoughts from the Players practice rounds...

 

Will post the pics up separately once I get them sorted out. But we had a great day and a half at the Players. Practice rounds - IMO - are really the way to go ($20/day). You can go anywhere and see anything with very few people, especially at a place like Sawgrass. And even when there were absurd crowds around one player - you could walk a little bit and be up one the ropes for the next group.

 

On the range it was great. We would pop over to the range or short game area every couple hours or so and while 95% of the people might be crowded around Jordan or Rory, you could walk 20 feet away and no one was watching Luke Donald. You could just sit there and listen to he and his caddie talking about various shots and there was no one else around. I'm always fascinated by watching these guys on the range, just the difference in swings and approaches and even equipment. I took a bunch of small, 4-5 second swing clips, will try to get those GIFd and posted too. But it was great watching all of the drills that they did.

 

Also caught Rory CLICK CLICK CLICK on his driver. It was sort of a Pavlovian response, I had my back turned and I immediately whipped around and said "Goose? GOOSE?"...nope, just Rory.

 

Spent a lot of time on the putting greens and chipping areas too. Not only loved watching these guys chip but there is an inordinate amount of BS'ing and story telling going on, it was great. Some guys spent almost no time on the range before they went out but were chipping for over an hour.

 

On 16 we thought we were safely out of range, we were @ 320 yards from the tee box past/below the bunker mound on the right - and it was well into the wind. Most guys were landing the ball 30-40 yards short of where we were. Tony Finau landed one directly behind us that ran into the woods, it was honestly hard to believe how far the ball went in the air. Beat up RZN Black that we tossed back to his caddie.

 

Its still impossible for me to appreciate how good Ricky's shots were on 17 when you see the green in person. To me its just always looked so much bigger on tv. But when you sit there and take in the whole size of the green/amphitheater and see how small that lower portion of the green really is, its incredible. The one thing that did surprise me is that we saw no guys practice the drop area shot. I know you maybe dont want to plan for it or psyche yourself out - or something like that - but the drop area shot seems harder to me and at least worth a look.

 

The course itself was beautiful. When we walked across the fairways you could feel out absolutely rock solid the fairways were and they were cut down lower than most greens I play on. Have a couple of course pics / comments I will get up too. I know some guys hate Pete Dye in general but there is something about this course I am really coming around to. Definitely would love to get a round in there sometime.

 

It was embarrassing how many adults were screaming at these guys on the course for an autograph. There are signs every 10 feet on every ropeline - No On-Course Autographs. But grown-a** men were yelling at these guys and berating them for not signing for them on the course. I'm sure thats fun to listen to every day, just total drunken moron screaming for autographs that they can sell on Ebay. Awesome. The actual autograph area itself had a height restriction so only kids under a certain height could get in.

 

Overall though, it was a great time. Ended up seeing a ton of guys staying on property there at the Marriott, which sort of surprised me because I guess I assumed these guys rented houses for big events like this.

We shot 22 under in our scramble today. We ended up coming in second. I was pleased with how I played. My driving was a complete 180 from Monday. Much improved. I only hit two bad tee shots. The neutral grip with light grip pressure, especially in the right hand, made a huge difference. Also setting he driver back to neutral probably helped too. Might rest up this weekend. I've played a fair bit of golf this week. We shall see how I feel come Saturday or Sunday.
